heres a handy shareware tool for converting between over 500 different 3d formats.

I found it through this 3d scanning site so I could use their .ply file meshes

Both of those links are very cool. How well do the .ply files translate?

Ummm *blush* i just tried to save them out of the conversion software and it seems you cant unless you register it for 50 bucks dag namit!! *shakes fist* I'll keep looking for a free conversion for .ply files. the models are cool though I just wanted to do some render tests with Maxwell using a high res scanned object.

Have you tried maxwell yet? Its pretty interesting.

I've been wanting to get my hands on maxwell for a while. How is the speed/quality?

well, speed is slow for a very smooth render but you can leave them cooking over night for some nice results. plus you can see pretty quickly if you have the settings right from the low sample levels. and you can change the lighting during the render. Its really like a photography simulator. I feel like Ive learnt a whole lot of traditional skills by learning how to use Maxwell. You have to model everything to scale and depth of field just happens depending on the conditions. lights are always object emitters, you focus the camera using the target, set your fstop and film speed and everything else just happens. You can then play with exposure film speed and the different light intesities while it renders, no anti-aliasing, no photons, no Gi samples. even caustics just happen as if they would in reality. download the demo and plugin for max from [Link to www.maxwellrender.com]
I've done some preliminary study on it so if you need a hand understanding how it works ask away.

Pan = Middle mouse (hold and move)
Toggle = Alt + Mddle Mouse (hold and move)
Zoom = Ctrl + Alt+ Mddle Mouse (hold and move up/down)

Hope that works!

Hey Tyson, can you put up several renders up (simple) with diff settings on the image, so we can see the diff. on film speed and all that photo stuff? Jst to see the different styles you can acheve with Maxwell.

yeah man, I'll do some examples. I got those digital scans into max finally. Heres the render test I did last night.

*Added a jade version, needs a few more hours to clean up the noise. Uses Maxwell SSS shader*

Wow looks detailed, how many polys?

1,087,716 polygons. very bloody heavy. They come in several different resolutions from the 3d scanning repository mentioned earlier, but I wanted to see the highest detail.
I copied him once to try two different materials side by side and it just froze my machine.
I think maxwell doesnt mind how heavy the meshes are though. Ive had max crash in the background and maxwell just keeps on rendering. Plus I think maxwell has some crazy displacement that doesnt use subdivision so you can crank it to infinity without crashing the system. havnt tried it yet.

yeah do it for sure. I'd say rendering in this brute force approach is the way of the future. when we have dual quad cores as standard you could get good results in minutes instead of hours. I was going to make an example but I found this video on the maxwell site showing how multi light works. basically you hit render in max or maya or whatever and it launches maxwell, then you can mess with all the different lights the shutter speed and the film iso. A feature that would save many hours of testing
