Hi there,

I've just installed 3DS Max 2009 and I am having problems applying textures to objects. I've got as far as loading my image into the Material Editor but the software won't let me apply the texture to any of my objects, what am I doing wrong?

I remember doing this before in the same version at University but now I can't seem to find the option. Before I could just click "Diffuse" and select an image and it would work although I couldn't get that option to appear.

Ah yeah, it's probably also worth mentioning that I am a complete newbie to the whole 3D Design thing, I'm much more used to Photoshop and the rest of the Adobe Family!!

Cheers,

Andy.

Drag and drop the material onto the object or select the object and click the button in the picture below.

I'll add that if you're using the "assign material to selection" button, it's good to have the object selected, otherwise it will be grayed out.

Also if you're expecting the material to show up on the object, in the viewpoint, be sure the button, "Show Standard Map in Viewport." It looks like a checkered cube.

Hi there,

I've tried the above but the buttons are greyed out and I've tried selecting the object first to no avail frown.gif.

I've captured my screen in a video so you can see exactly what I'm doing and hopefully what I'm doing wrong smile.gif.

Click below to view the video. It's probably best if you view the video in high quality as the video quality didn't come out the best smile.gif.

haha i had exactly the same problem when i started using max, you have your bitmap rollout in material editor, you need to click "go to parent" to get to the material and then you can apply it to your object.
i used Jamie's picture, so ignore the red square, and press the green one grin.gif then you can apply it to your object by pressing a red squared button grin.gif

Hmm, for some reason that option is greyed out completely...what's going on?! frown.gif I'm selecting the object before opening the Material Editor which I assume is correct and nothing seems to be popping up.

Any further ideas please? smile.gif

You're inside the diffuse channel options. Back up to the main material menu and you will be able to apply that material to the object.

Or try this. Put your bitmap in the diffuse slot instead of clicking "get material"

Hey guys,

isaac: I'm not quite sure what menu or options you mean. At the moment I've got the Material Editor open and I've selected a grey sphere (no textures applied). Where do I need to go from there to successfully import the image (JPEG, does this matter?!)?

cdballew: I've tried that option but it doesn't apply my texture properly and instead just applies a blue-y colour to the wall instead of the complete wallpaper pattern.

-----------

I'm starting to wonder if I'm using the wrong format image since 3DS Max doesn't seem to be allowing me to do anything with this JPEG!

Cheers for the quick replies!

Andrew.

Ah ha! Awesome...I just checked out a tutorial on how to add materials and noticed one vital option which looked different from the tutor's setup to mine. For some reason, I had "Arch & Design" enabled instead of "Standard" on the button which is just next to the ".... - Default" drop-down menu.

I clicked on "Arch & Design", changed it to "Standard" and voila! it let me use the "Diffuse" option which was the way I got my textures to be applied on the University's machines!

Not a clue why "Arch & Design" had been enabled but there we are...one of life's mysteries I guess! Thanks very much for your pointers though everyone, I'll be sure to keep this topic as a favourite to refer back to if I want to pick and choose my texture-applying options smile.gif.
