I read in 3d world magazine today that now Autodesk has acquired softimage XSI they will be replacing
character studio with the (softimage) "character animators tool kit" plugiin (CAT) in the next release of 3ds max.
Personally I use CAT alot and really see its advantages but I do have many characters rigged with biped aswell so
hopefully they are both present in the next version. now we just need them to integrate vray into the package and we are set wink.gif

Autodesk never replaces anything. They'll just jam it in with all the other pluggins they've purchased over the years. I'm sure we'll see a "Mudbox" option in the modifier stack someday. tongue.gif

It seems like the autodesk development cycle is:

1. By as many 3rd party plugins as they can within the year

2. Release next version of max with new plugins included

well I'm not complaining about that. The more the merrier, at least finally there will be a decent rigging plugin included. I've been holding off upgrading to max 2009 cos I don't want to have to upgrade CAT and vray aswell (and the miriad of other freebies that arent written for versions above 9). Plus I havent seen anything all that great in a new release for quite some time.

It seems like autodesk is well on the way to total omnipotence. Max, Maya, XSI.

I can almost see stewy from family guy rubbing his hands together with glee at the autodesk CEO office.

Yeh, that's bad. Competition is a good thing for the consumer and autodesk seems to be buying out all the competition.
