I was talking to a guy I work with the other day and he was telling me about his son who wants to get into game design. I mentioned 3ds max to him and said that it would be a good program for him to learn if he's keen. I thought a little bit more about it and it occured to me that getting into Max might be a bit of a trial for a 12 year old. What do you guys think? And what do you think a 12 year old should start off doing in max? Is modeling too advanced? I thought maybe basic animation might be fun and hold his attention a bit more because other aspects of max can be a bit technical. [Link to www.3dprevis.com]
I taught my 12 yr old bro box modeling and path and keyframe animation. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
i think for a 12 yr old reactor etc might be a bit much....but then again, kids these days learn stuff faster....atleast i think it's that way...maybe i'm just getting old
anyway, i think modelling stuff will be a good starting point....its more or less instant gratification....you click box, sphere, etc and do anything anywhere and you end up with the shape you want....
Cogito, Ergo Sum
You got to remember 12 year olds now probably have about as much experience with technology and computers in general as we do now. I think he should just jump into max with some good tutes and help from us? Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
Yeh, I'll definately point him to the forum.
I was scared of modeling when I started, I always found it difficult. I just assumed everyone else did as well but I guess it's a good place to start.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
erhm I started making simple logo's for a start and then animated it.. then after few months.. I finally realize when I saw u guys work.. You guys here do a lot on modelling so I wanna try..
Its just what I undergo and experience...
Started Max last September 2008
3dsmax is fine but take small steps. Don't push the whole UI or it won't be as fun.
Show him how to start up MAX, find the shapes, and place them in the environment. Give him a small assignment that requires him to construct a scene or an object that's recognizable when rotated (house, clown face, scene/environment). Once he's got that, show him editable poly. That's it.
After that, he should be able to self improve with out lots of help from a tutor, using online resources.
