Hi guys,

I'm very new to the whole 3d Studio thing so apologies for that and believe me I've searched the web a lot for how to approach this issue with no real luck having attempted any steps I've found.

I've produced a 32 panelled football that I would like to texture with a blue marble type Earth texture like those found here: [Link to visibleearth.nasa.gov]

The ball looks like this (for illustrative purposes): [Link to www.martinhawkins.co.uk]

The NASA images would map on to a sphere perfectly but that doesn't seem to be an option in my case unless I'm approaching the materials editor incorrectly? It only appears that I have the option of texturing each panel individually.

So I wondered if I'd need to produce a texture map that I can then apply the image to in some 2d software but this is where I've been stuck for a while - producing a usable texture map. I imagined being able to produce some kind of seamless template that I could warp the image into...

I'd really appreciate any guidance on how best to approach this. Thanks.

Would it be possible to give us a .3ds so I can try some stuff out?

If you dont want your model out there then its cool, just will be great not to have to model it ourselves.

I'm not sure what's needed so I've uploaded the max and 2 3ds files - one with max's texture coordinates and one without. I figured I'd upload too much rather than not enough. smile.gif

Thanks for any time spent on this.

I'm sure this is only one of the ways to skin the proverbial cat, but here's what I did. Starting with the max file, I selected one panel of the ball and converted to poly, then used attach and selected all the other panels. Then I applied the UVW map modifier and chose spherical as the mapping.

Well that seems to work really well.

Ah it seems so simple in the end. The UVW map modifier on the whole thing was the key. Thanks a lot to you both for your help. Now to learn about getting my lighting and texture alignment spot on. smile.gif

To be honest you probably won't be interested in the final product as such. What I'm doing is probably overkill for what I need. I'm generating 2d stuff (a logo) based around pics of this ball...
