Hey chaps, I have been looking deeper into the options for my laptop purchase
and I'm not entirely sure what options to prioritise
firstly theres the issue of xp and vista I've pretty much decided to go with XP but still want a 64bit processor, dell says they can't offer me the 64bit core 2 duo unless I get the system with vista?? I'm sure there is XP64 or something.

then is it worth getting a dual harddrive RAID 0 setup. Alienware have that option for like 200 dollars extra but maybe its overkill?.

Alienware also have an option for a dual SLI setup, it costs 600 more and I'm not certain it will improve my 3d work enough for the cost, especially as the main benefit will be for games that soon enough will all need a DX10 card right?.

would you say that more RAM (like 4gig) and a 64bit processor is more important than getting the RAID upgrade and or the SLI upgrade. and would I even notice the extra RAM if I pay the 350 for an extra 2gigs? It all seems like overkill for a laptop but its the difference between 500 here and 600 there if I'm keeping it under 3000 dollars.

I'm not sure about the RAID, but I probably wouldn't go for SLI at this stage, for the amount extra you'll have to pay you don't really get the performance. You don't get twice the speed with twice the cards, even if they are the same. I'd probably go the RAM and the 64 bit processer. You should also note that only vista will run games in DX10 mode. DX10 games will work on xp but you won't get the DX10 effects.

I hoped that would be the case about the dx10 games. I tried loading a demo off a pc gamer disc and it wouldnt run, but that is using my now quite old system with a quadro 3000 card. It doesnt run games well at all. Its tempting to get the SLI but you are probably quite right, save the cash. would you say a single nvidia 512 7950 gt would be fast enough for say a game like Bioshock? or even Oblivion? I never got the full experience with oblivion, I could get it to show me low res textures with no foliage and I could see some distant hills etc.. but as soon as there was more than one enemy it would drop to like 10fps.

have you played it bioshock? I've read some reviews and I'm quite keen to try it out.
not that I have a spare moment to play immersive atmospheric games these days.
thanks for the advice.

I'm running oblivion on a 6800 ultra, and I get a decent frame rate at decent quality settings. On Toms Hardware the 7950 gt approximately doubles the 6800 ultra framerate on oblivion at 1024 on high settings. So I'd say it would be fine in that respect, not sure about more recent games though. Haven't really seen much about bioshock, but what I have seen looks pretty good. Graphics wise anyway.
