I am just getting started in 3ds Max, and I am going through all the tutorials like a good little student. So far, I am having a lot of fun, and I am doing as well as can be expected. I have come to the third tutorial, where you model chess pieces, and everything went fine on the pawn and the bishop. Now I am on the Rook, and it was going great, until I got to the battlements at the top. I extruded them correctly, but they have a very faceted look to them; while the rest of the piece does not. The tutorial says, "From the Modifier list, choose Smooth. The entire rook now appears faceted." I apply smoothing, and nothing changes; the battlements are faceted, and the rest of the piece is not. The tutorial goes on, "In the Parameters rollout, turn Auto Smooth on and leave Threshold at the default value of 30.0. Any two adjoining faces that meet at an angle less than that value will be made part of the same smoothing group and no edge will appear between them." I do this, and still no change. I have tried turning the modifier off and on to check for a difference. I have tried modifying the threshold. I have checked rendering with multiple differences, and yet, no effect.

Does anyone have any idea of what I could be doing wrong?

Thanks,
Cory

Make sure you've got nothing selected in the edit poly modifier. The little grey square next to the edit poly modifier means that something is selected. Deselect everything and it should be fine.
