I have some files downloaded from the net for free (3d objects made in max 7 and 8) - it gives me a editable mesh and its texture is gray,.. i wanted to change its texture but I don't know what to do... I tried to use "explode" command but it gives me a series of poly's cant easily texture.. sometimes explode doesn't work..

Why are you using explode to help texture an object? What happens when you apply a new material to the object?

I want to use a different texture .. If I apply the new material it paints the whole object which I don't want. I tried UVW mapping takes a lot of to paint

explode is for ungrouping grouped groups. as in if you have several groups within another group and you want all the objects to be seperate in one step. If you want to texture individual elements of a mesh that has multiple pieces you need to select the element in editable poly and apply a material to the subobject selection.

Or you can apply separate material IDs to the polygons and apply a mulit/sub object material.

I'm really not sure why you are using explode? Also remember that if you use other peoples models that you need to credit them.
