This might sound really stupid, but I've had USB drives that will only work in the back usb ports on your pc. It's haven't with a couple of drives on a couple of PCs. I have no idea why this happens, but it might be worth trying if you haven't already.

Not as stupid as it might seem. Some USB ports are not 'powered' ports. In other words they don't supply power (up to 6amp at 5V, 12V or 24V IIRC) to the device plugged in. Things like USB keys won't work, however other devices such as printers that have their own power connections will work fine. I've found that this mainly affects "cheaper" PC such as entry level Dells/HP, etc, and also many external USB hubs. Non-powered ports are mainly phased out now so most newer PCs should be fine.

However the OP's problem does appear to be something different. Jovanie, could you check the disk manager and see if that shows your drive? (Right-click "My Computer", select "Manage" and look under disk management from the options on the left.) Be carefull though, it can be easy to wipe one of you hard drives using that tool. Another thing you could check is "device manager", which will appear in the same tool as the "disk manager". If Windows has problems with the device it will appear with either a yellow exclaimation mark or a red 'X'. You can then right click the device and select properties to get further information. One common solution I've seen with some USB flash drives can be to right-click the device, select uninstall, remove the device physicallyt, reboot the computer, then re-insert the flash drive.

Interesting info atg, thanks. Yeh this was a few years ago, and one of the computers was already pretty old back then. It's weird that they used different USB ports in the front than in the back though.

If you can, try it on another computer before junking it.

You didn't get it from eBay or something similar did you? There has been quite a few dodgy ones coming from eBay recently.
