Hey all,
Would just like to give you some good news from my side smile.gif
As some of you might have known, I was applying for an MSc in Computer Animation.
Well, I've been accepted into Bournemouth University as well as University of Kent (Canterbury).
I've applied to one another - Goldsmiths College, (Univ. of London), and I hope to get accepted there as well.
Will then have to choose from these three. Would like some advice from you all.
Here are the pages for the syllabus in each place. Tell me what you think smile.gif

1) [Link to courses.bournemouth.ac.uk]
2) [Link to www.ee.kent.ac.uk]
3) [Link to www.goldsmiths.ac.uk]

And Bournemouth is home to the National Center for Computer Animation (NCCA) (informally ranked 8th in the world for CGI)

Awesome!!, Its going to be fun living and studying overseas, you'll be moving to the UK yeah?.
The courses look really interesting, there seems to be a focus on the technical end of things. understanding how to write raytracers, all the mathematical principles behind computer graphics etc.. I'm interested to know about some of that stuff but personally I would be looking for a course that focused more on the front end, or at least taking those modules like animation techniques and rigging.
What area of 3d are you most interested in becoming professional?

Thanks AHZ and Tyson!
yeah i'll be moving to the UK about August end i guess... it'll be a whole different world for me!

Funny that you should ask that question at the end, because that's the exact dilemma i'm in now. I'm not sure which area I want to specialise in, cos if you see, the Kent course is almost completely front-end, and deals with mainly character animation (in great detail), while the BU course is the one that involved a lot of scripting, writing raytracers, particle systems, etc...it's a very solid course, and highly recommended, but as you say, it involved less front-end work.......while the Goldsmiths course is complete Games Programming, down to every detail....don't think there's any 3d work involved.....but the lecturers of the Games Prog. course are like HUGE! as in, these guys have founded and run games companies and often guest lecture at SIGGRAPH, etc.... but no 3d work, only advanced programming and serious 3d research (point clouds, etc)

So i'm lost. I'm sort of angling towards BU cos it's virtually #1 in UK for animation, and it'll give me a solid grounding in the technical side. Maybe I can learn more of the front-end stuff on my own?

yeah, I guess it comes down to how you want to develop your knowledge. I went the route of teaching myself 3d and trying to get employment based on a showreel as an artist. I would love to know all about scripting and technical things but I felt that if I spread myself too thin I wouldnt get to where I wanted to be as a modeller or an animator. Im still in that dilemma even between the front end areas. I love animation but I'm far more experienced in modelling and texturing. I'd love to get further into the games industry but I'm not sure what kind of salary I could get as a modeller in that field (I was offered a modelling job in maya and took a different gig instead because the pay was so much lower, and I didnt know maya at the time). I think If I was going to go back to study I would want to focus in on learning more about the arts end of the pipeline and take what I already do quite well and make it oustanding. I would feel like writing a raytracer from scratch or something would be somewhat off topic in terms of furthering my existing talent base but learning how to properly use dynamics software like realflow and take my rigging to a new level of difficulty would greatly improve and add to my existing skills.
I guess you have to ask yourself what you enjoy doing the most and what sort of personal goals you have for your own art because thats what will eventually become important in the long run.

thanks a lot, Tyson. So you taught yourself 3d, and got jobs through showreels? That sounds good, maybe I'll be able to do that as well. Maybe I can learn the Visual Effects technical stuff at BU, and then teach myself more 3d (maybe I can learn ZBrush, Maya, etc and also improve my knowledge of rigging, modelling, etc ?)
How long has it taken you to know the things you do? I'm guessing, offhand, any 3d software I name you'll be able to work with and are probably already familiar with. That includes renderers, lighting systems, special effects, etc..

I think I can rule out the Games prog. course, cos I'm pretty sure I don't want to program the rest of my life. Big-shot lecturers be damned.

So its really only BU and Kent. And like you said, i'll have to decide for myself.
Sigh......

That's great news, they all look like great courses, it's just a matter of you deciding what you really want to do. However, It is good to remember that whatever you do, it won't be the end of the learning process, as you will be learning new stuff for the rest of your life. So you can always come back to the other stuff later if you do visual effects first or vice versa. I'd say if you do any of these courses you're probably gonna get awesome skills in something which will more than likely translate into employment, which will open doors to new skills.

thanks a lot Gerard smile.gif
yeah i guess i will be constantly learning new stuff. that never stops. in fact, starting this April, i'm gonna learn Zbrush grin.gif

I was looking at that BU link above (Jon Macey's page) and there was a small list of suggestions for the group project or something. It had some really good ideas, like a plugin to add dirt to a scene (generally make a 3d scene look realistic, maybe faded/dirty) or another one for procedural buildings! that last one was really cool, sort of a 'lego' approach to buildings!

oh and speaking of lego approaches, i started on the GECK, and have finished the layout tutorial!

Hey, Congrats! So you have about six months to learn the language right? wink.gif

thanks chris!
which language do you mean? C++? I'm pretty familiar with it actually, although Python is completely new to me!
and yeah most of the software they use is new to me as well (they use Linux, XSI, Maya, etc.....i use WinXP, 3dsMax, etc tongue.gif)
so maybe i'll have to prep myself a bit before....
but for now, am just going to try getting a better grounding in 3d.....Zbrush, Mudbox, and some serious modelling in 3dsMax (characters, environments, etc)

I was actually making a lame joke about moving to the UK, the language being English, but a different dialect....which is funny because you know English...you know, like they speak a different language in the UK....but they don't, ... like I said, lame joke.

Awesome mate, that is indeed amazing.
The current study which I'm doing gives their certificates from Cambridge University, i.e. the exams are conducted by CIE (Cambridge International Examinations). Know anything about them or like how good in standards they are?

although I have heard of MAAC, Image, Arena, etc.. doing some good work.
sounds like a good program dude
