hi guys. i used blender before 3ds max and even though 3ds is tempting, there is a few things i miss that prevents me using it to the best of my abillity. one of those things is to restrict movement of your current action (whether your moving something, scaling something, cutting something) on one axis only. in blender you just hit y x or z (or a combination of those with shift; z + shift + y for example) and all movement was restricted to those angles. im having troubles cutting a straight line in 3ds max for example.. ;(

yeah its always hard to swap over from something you're used to. I'm sure theres loads of cool stuff in blender. I have a friend who worked on Elephants dream the blender foundation film made in Amsterdam. he uses blender like it was a part of his arm or something. Its amzing there is something like it as its open source software, quite awesome. Theres a studio here in Sydney that has just swapped to blender from max called Pro-motion. they say its working really well having a complete studio of software for free plus all the tech support from the blender community. they ask for a fix or an extra tool and its written for them overnight by some eager blender coder out there. great stuff. Still, there are ways to achieve the same goals in max. you can use axis constraints and set-up shortcut keys for them in the customise menu. I'd say you could emulate the blender snapping and axis constraints pretty closely.

I rarely use more than angle snap and snap to vertex, but there are others- particularly the percent snap that may be useful- especially when used in conjunction with the axis constraints.

Re: axis constraints, if you are not comfortable with using the gizmo handles to constrain to axis, you might want to bring the axis tool bar out (right click on a blank section of the tool bar to gain access to it), and then toggle the gizmo off with the X key.

The constraints used to have shortcut keys before the gizmo, so you may not even need to make custom ones (unless you want your Blender ones)
