Hey guys! Ive been thinking . my friend gave me a dvd from gnomon on how to model in maya so i thought that would be very usefull, but the problem is i wanted to learn max , because i feel like its more widley used in game development and just over all. if i do learn maya well how hard will it be to transition Maya TO Max. im just scared learning maya wouldnt help me as much as max would.

-Thanks again!

They're almost equal in popularity.

I use maya tutorials all the time and i'm a hard core max user.

Yeah, they both do the same thing really. I think max has better poly modelling tools
and is slightly easier to pick up and use. maya has many abstract things going on and can be initially more difficult to learn
Both software has a solid user base and there are companies that use both.

If I were you I would learn to model in max and try to pick up the basics of maya too. then as you improve you may be able to get work and you will learn loads about a specific software when you are on the job.

I used Maya for 3 years.. and crossing over to max only took about 2 weeks.. they do the same things, you just gotta know what you're looking for in terms of tools and purpose. This isn't always the rule.. but I've always considered Maya = Animation / Max = Gaming. But really it just depends on what interface suits you better.. I liked Max's interface soooo much more than maya. Ive been using Max for 2 and a half years now, and the experience has been great.

Hope this helps. and Good luck!

Yeh, I started using Maya a month or 2 ago and it is a bit of a steep learning curve compared to max. Some people say that Maya can do more, but I've never found max to be restricive at all. It's really up to you, if you want to get a job out of it, it might be a good idea to check what the studios near you are using and learn that.
