Hi, im new on the forum, in fact i just registered cause i need some help, I started using 3DS max abou a year ago so im not fully skilled but i like working with 3D.
I need some help with ambient occlusion. I know what it is and how to creat it with mental ray and I also know there are more than one way to do it but what I dont know is how can i use the shadows created after rendering the occlusion on the final render. If I rendere with AO the scene is white and the shadows are black or gray but how do I use them on the final scene (with colors). I will post an image tomorrow so u will understen better what i mean.
Any help is usefull except links to other webs cause i checked them all and i didn't found the answer to this question

Hi GhostFight3r,

I usually use vRay so I'm not sure if I'm going to be much help. But whenever I have had to do GI in mental ray I have used Indirect Illumination, just turn it on and tweak around with the photon settings until its cool.

Otherwise, there's a tutorial on mental ray GI here:

I would usually use ambient occlusion as a seperate render pass and "multiply" it over the top of your coloured render in photoshop or after fx. to give it more definition and contrast.
alternatively you could maybe put your ambient occlusion map into the second slot of an rgb multiply map having the effect of making all your cracks and grooves darker and leaving your colours the same everywhere else.

you need to increase your gi settings. The black patches are from the GI settings being too low. you need to increase things like photons per sample in the GI rollout. enable final gather and increase the rays per FG point and even the intitial final gather point density. that should help but the render will get slow. try increasing things a little bit at a time.
