... according to some movies.

I always wonder what impression some of these "made for Americans" movies have on people in other countries. I know some of them are making it around the world because they always compare domestic revenues with international.

I'm not talking about good movies. I'm referring to your run of the mill, block buster, with no real plot and enormous budget. Just about all of those from the U.S. follow this formula, where WE save Y'ALL.

So when you see a movie that's all about Americans saving the world, because other countries can't do it, what's your reaction? Do you enjoy the movie anyway?

It doesn't even phase me. No matter what movie I watch I'm always with the side of the hero and always forget everything out side the movie while I watch it. So if I watch a Japanese movie, for that moment, I'm also Japanese, because I'm following a character in their shoes. Like, when I watch James Bond it won't even occur to me that the bad guys are my nationality until after the movie's over. Even then it doesn't bother me. I want to be James Bond! !@#& it... I am James Bond!

I guess my opinion being Australian doesnt really count, Ive been exposed to both UK and US popular culture in almost equal measure all my life. But I am living in a different country and form my own biases against the more overt examples of American Dogmatism.
Im not usually too concerned when I see blatant displays of American nationalistic pride, but I do find myself rolling my eyes at certain really bad examples. I particularly dont like it when theres an American war film that paints America as the good guy in all ways, failing to convey the full unbiased truth of what happens in war. such as the film pearl harbour. but theres plently of other American war films that do a great job. apocalypse now etc...

I guess there's lots of those, but not all of them are war movies.

Also, I'm trying to think of movies where Australians are the main enemy against an American. I think "the rescuers down under", a movie I haven't seen in decades, is the only only one I've ever seen with that happening. But the bad guy might have not been Australian... Can't remember...

I know a french actor was complaining that almost all american movies he was cast in used him as a bad guy.

In Samurai shamploo, an anime, they have a bunch of Americans trying to cheat their way in a baseball game. It's great! It still makes me laugh. They all huddle together saying in bad English, "Damn Japs", "Eye for an eye. That's the American way!", and other things. The end shows the Americans running back to their war ships, some of which are very overweight, yelling "Crazy kamikazes!"

I'm italian, so we're supposedly all mafia minions or mafia minions' parents, wives, children or victims, in american movies.

Anyway I share isaac's point of view, the hero is just the hero, no matter where he was born (I omitted "she" by purpose).

But I also have to say some movies really display a ranting opinion of USA greatness. I'll just mention one title for all: "Independence Day".

Still pertinent to the topic, I think we should also talk about how, in many american movies, US people seem to believe they're God's chosen ones. I've also noticed they really apply this concept even to politics (at least in movies) to "overheat" masses. It's my opinion this is a dangerous way to use a religion: if you believe a god to be unerring, then everything it says is more than just a law. A US president saying God wants american people to go to war, well....that reminds me of certain peoples that live somewhere toward south-east.
No Gods but Yourself!! >.<

Independence day is a great example. For those that haven't seen it, Will Smith and Jeff Goldblum, our heroes, figure out how to beat the aliens and fly up to the mother ship to destroy it allowing the rest of the world to fight back. The U.S. president flies a fighter jet and shoots down a bunch of alien ships. Crisis averted by the chosen ones. tongue.gif I kid!! But that's what the movie did.
