Chris has inspired me to get creative and create my first robot. People always ask why I don't push myself to do a more complex model, so I'm giving it a shot. I've come up with a little different concept for a robot. I will post a couple of pics for now, but you probably won't get the concept until later. I will see a motor that I have made on the side to operate the end extremity. It will have 3 wires attached to it (forward, reverse and ground wire). The back of this extremity will be controlled by a piston and hydraulics. This should be an interesting model test for me.
OK OK It's on now! hahaha ...No really it's on.
But seriously, looks awesome. Can't wait to see the rest. This will surely keep me going on my bot.

Thanks Chris! I agree Matt, bring the challenge on. That will give us a reason to push harder. I'll have to admit, I'm having a lot of fun building this. It's the first time that I've done something this complex with "no reference" material. I drew a couple of sketches and went from there. I like after you make a sketch, how you start to build it and it just evolves. Once I finish the main base detailing, I'll have to figure out how I want to build on top of the glass plate above the battery pack and main hydraulic cylinder.
Great model Rick. Doesn't look very friendly though. Guess I'll have to start thinking about a good robot design. Now how can I work a toilet into this one?[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
Ok, here is my first issue that i want to try and solve. Since I am not very familiar with animating certain thing, I need some help. I want to run (3) wire from each motor to the battery pack under the glass plate. My issue is not in making the wires, but the use of method's that would allow those wire to move, stretch or sway when the bot is animated. I've looked at the flex modifier and that didn't seem to do the trick. It seemed like the best choice was the "Cloth"modifier. With that, I can attach vert's to other objects. This is more of what I am looking for, but it seems that you have to simulate before you can create the key frame. Can someone suggest the best way to create something like this?
I'm changing my design concept a little. Since the challenge has been made for the making of robot, but they have to show their purpose, I'm going for more of a "police drone". I've mounted bullet proof glass around each motor, the main drive wheel and batteries. I have also added a camera, which isn't finished yet. I have several idea's on how I want to finish the rest. Let me know what you think.

Lookin good. I'm still trying to come up with a good idea for my entry. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
Thanks guys... As for the muzzle flash... That was an interesting chore. Since I can't seem to get Afterburn to work with VRay lights, I had to make due. I start with a sphere and elongated it and put it at the end of the barrel and applied a really bright VRay Light Material to the sphere's and rendered it, giving the lighting on the scene as flashes of lights. Then I opened a new scene and just rendered out a small Afterburn Combustion atmospheric gizmo and exported it as a .PNG file. I then took the scene and the .PNG file and put them into Photoshop and layered the Afterburn flash over the sphere's with the light material. I then added some smudging and box blurring.
Ok, that was a mouth fool.... I need to find a useful technique in 3DS Max to use as a muzzle flash so I can animated it.
Rick
for animation you could make an object with morpher with a self illuminated material, maybe falloff and some falloff in opacity. (you can increase the falloff maps output to make it illuminate like a vray light material does or sync some omnis to cast interactive light) have an animated noise modifier on it with a high frequency and animate its visibility and the morph or wire them together so they sync. renderer it seperatley with scanline and motion blur and screen it over in post.
