Hi, I'm very new to 3d Studio max. Is there a way to apply a material to selected polygon on one object? Say I have a building created out of one cube, but I want to apply a glass material to the window recesses and a concrete material to the rest, could I select the polygons that make up the windows and apply a glass material just to them? If not, how would I go about separating the "windows" from the rest of the building into separate objects to apply materials to?

You certainly can:

1. Convert your object to Editable Poly

2. Select Face mode

3. Select your faces

4. Apply material

I've never done it that way. I thought you needed to use a multi/sub-object material.

Really? I guess its a habit I picked up from Wings, I've never used multi/sub-objects... I thought that this was just the way you're meant to do it.

What are the benefits of multi/sub-object?

Well for starters I don't think you can apply materials to polys in max without using the multi/sub material. I could be wrong though. Benefits of multisub? Probably none over your method. Except the one I mentioned above. To be honest I've had a lot of problems not so much with the material, but assigning material IDs to individual polys. Sometimes the ID's will change randomly or the materials won't show up. Very annoying.

Yeah I cant say I know much about material IDs, I just assign materials to objects/surfaces.

But I did use this method today for applying materials to individual polys and it worked fine.
