Hi there,

I'm still working through my bedroom project at the moment and have a "window" setup but I've just photographed the outside view of my bedroom from the window and tried to apply it as a texture and it doesn't seem to like it. Is it because of the large filesize (4.96Mshades.gif trying to render quickly or something more?

When I try to render the picture, it just appears as a blank white space.

Any ideas?

Cheers,

Andrew.

Nevermind...it must be due to the high filesize because I just resized the image in Photoshop, exported using "Save For Web" and this has solved the problem. smile.gif

Yea there are many formats you can use for a background image on a plane. I would suggest using just a jpg for that. However for custom textures I just use a psd file and then I can change it on the fly and see the update in max. Also I would recommend pushing self illumination in the material slot up to 100 percent and stop light from effecting the plane because you don't want shadows on your background plane. Also using a subtle bend modifier on the plane can make it seem a little less flat.

Can you use psd as a map in max?

Yes you can and when you save you work on PS when you witch to max it automatically updates, very handy when you are trying to paint textures.

Yeah, as jamie said its really usefull to make changes to the psd and update in max automatically. to save ram you should probably save it out as a .tga when your done though but thats only necessary if you have a large scene where the textures are starting to push the ram to high. 4.96 meg is definitely not too large though. If you go too far up beyond 4000 pixels you will have problems and loads of 2000 or 4000 pixel images will Kill your ram. but when I've rendered characters with vray displacement created in zbrush I always use a 4096 pixel square displacement map, I think there is a limit but I just tried a 6000pixel image and it loads in fine, just a bit slowly.
