Are there decent books or tutorials purely for getting started with architectural vizualisation, everybook i seem to pick up seems to be for creating computer games...etc!
I haven't done much architectural visualisation myself, but I have read a good book called digital lighting and rendering by Jeremy Birne. There's quite a lot of good information there on lighting and rendering interior scenes, and it's not specific to any particular software package.

Yea i got some lighting vids from Gnomon they were awesome! You should check them out. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
If your interested specifically in architectural illustration I would suggest learning as much as you can about lighting and rendering in a general sense but also learning vray, Vray seems to be the renderer of choice for architectural viz, and its coming out for Maya now also.
As steve says the gnomon workshop disks are great. theres one on vray lighting that was very informative. From what I've experienced from my latest job hunting efforts it seems that a typical pipeline for architectural work involves modeling in something like archicad

then beveling and detailing in max or Maya, rendering with vray and comping with fusion or combustion. or of course photoshop.
As far as 3d books go I am always dissappointed with the ones that try and teach you how to do it all in a specific package. Books that have really been beneficial to my 3d knowledge have been more general such as "the art and science of digital compositing" by Ron Brinkman or "the animators survival kit" by Richard Williams, The book steve mentioned is great too. Also try going to [Link to www.chaosgroup.com] and just have a read of the Vray manual theres heaps of step by step tutorials as well as all the technical info about the software. Ive learnt more that way than any other.
