heres a little something i spent the day working on. basically its a stock standard IK FK switch, but I constrained ribbons to the setup allowing for extra deformation controls. Using this setup its possible to pull the arm geo away from the arm joint and create bendy rubber hose arms or create extreme poses in quick movements or just place the elbow where ever i want. basically its another option for more flexibility when animating.

The first video demonstrates the arm switching from IK to FK and also demonstrates a nice forearm twist made possible using a ribbon. I chose not make a blend between FK and IK because it often leads to odd deformations, instead the arms just pop into IK or FK.

the second video shows me pulling the geo away from arm and posing it into a nice arc. I then move the fk setup around and even switch to IK and the arm remains bendy.

it should be noted that the arm isn't skinned to the arm joints just broken into pieces and parented to corresponding joints along the arm.

and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

Wow, so much flexibility. I'm not quite understanding what you mean by "the arm isn't skinned to the arm just broken in to pieces and parented to the joints." Have you just broken it up for the purpose of this demo or is that part of the usual process?

woops i should re- read what i write so that it makes sense. The arm isn't skinned to the joints controlling it, i just cut it up and parented its pieces to corresponding joints along the arm. I broke it up like this because i couldn't be bothered painting weights for proper deformations. as it stands its a proxy rig designed for faster feedback in the viewport.
and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

Thats an awesome arm rig man. loads of control. Makes me want to add this type of thing to my next rig. Would it be possible to get a maya scene of this set up to reverse engineer?

def add it if you can. just the ability to move the elbow where ever you want can be a life saver, the bendy arms is just a bonus.

also while your playing around with it, if you manage to break it or something crazy happens let me know. it seems pretty solid atm but I haven't really done anything with it.
