This the model of an autorickshaw which i'm trying to make.... an autorickshaw is a very popular means of transport in urban India. It's also known as 'three wheeler' as it runs on 3 wheels. Countries like Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Colombo, Jakarta also have these.

I made this model with the help of some reference pics..... well... some little work is left in modelling which i'll do. In the meantime, i'm posting the work in progress. Pla leave ur comments and suggestions.

Looks cool, a bit futuristic, maybe you could sharpen up some bevels. or seperate some objects out to make it less "vac formed" looking.

If you are interested....

vacuum forming is when something is molded all in one piece piece of plastic like this website describes

thanx Tyson...yeah... there are some faults in the model... which i'll correct but the reference images which i got r also not too clear...i'll post some images..

i saw the 'vac form' tut., i think it's moulding and compressing the plastic to get the desired shape... is it??

Below are some of the reference images....

Well you're off to a good start, I can't really see any problems. Maybe jsut tighten up the edges around the windscreen a bit, make them a bit sharper. Great work!

It's there in the tutorials by the heading - Making of Mini Taxi. Plz check it , Gr8 work. Here's the link--

Lighting and materials are great. Maybe just reduce the size of the brick texture, it makes the rickshaw look too small. Really good work though.

Thanx matt and Steve for the compliments....i'm happy u liked the work....i'll reduce the size of the bricks. i'm having some doubts here which i want to clarify....

i used the vray meaterial for the glass screen, i increased the value of Refract button but in the image the reflection of HDRI map is also visible in the glass, becoz of which little is visible of the inside part of the vehicle...so what i want to ask is that how can i make the glass more refractive and use the least amount of reflection on it??

secondly.... i wanted to ask is that - suppose there are 3-4 shiny objects in a scene. i want to use HDRI map for a particular object and not on all objects , but when i increase the reflection amt., The HDRI map is visible on all the objects. Is there any way of applying it only one object?? Thanx.

okay for your glass you're going to want 100% reflect and 100% refract and turn Fresnel Reflections on.

Thanx varnished....ur suggestion really helped me.... i tried it and the half part of the glass is showing good refraction but the other half is same as it was yesterday... i mean it's showing too much reflection.. i'll post the image. I also tried using a tree here.

As for your second question, go to the maps section of your vray material and down the bottom you will see an environment map button. You should be able to put you alternative relfection map in here.

Also, when you've loaded up your reflection map into the slot, remember to drag an instance into a new material slot. Click the environment radio button and select spherical environment as the mapping type. If you don't do this your reflections will look wrong.

thanx steve.... i went to the environment map in the v-ray maps section...but i didn't get ur further points.... cud u plz post a brief tut. on it anytime when u r free?? thanx..

Well..one more query to be solved.... The headlights, as u see in the image don't look like glass. i used the v-ray refraction material and reflection - nil.... So what settings shud i do in order to make it look like the glass headlights?

1. Open your environment window and click the environment map slot.

2. Choose vray hdri.

3. Drag from the slot to a spare slot in the material editor. Choose instance when it asks. Choose your hdri map and set to spherical mapping.

4. Open your vray render options and turn off Default lights.

5. Turn GI on.

6. Set your irradience map to low, and calc phase on.

7. Open the Environment rollout and tick both boxes for Environment override and reflection override. Drag the hdri material from the material editor to the map slot and choose instance. Do the same for the reflections slot.

Render!

A little bit, I don't genreally bother putting anything in the max environment slot as I think vray overrides is anyway. Also, I've never actually used the vray hdri map before, infact I didn't even know it existed. So double thanks, Matt. smile.gif Everything else is pretty much the same.

If you put stuff in the Max Environment slot it shows up as the actual environment. If you just put it in the vray slot the scene is lit with the hdri but with black (or whatever) colour background.

I usually just stick hdri in the vray slots and a different backdrop in the max slot.

thanx chris for the appreciation.. i'm experimenting some more textures for the ground... and i was trying to make a rickshaw stand which is very common in India. One can find these rickshaw stands everywhere.... so i was trying to make one and therefore i duplicated 4-5 rickshaws but suddenly the 3ds max showed error message stating " The machine ran out of memory , reduce ur iterations for meshsmooth" and the whole work closed down. Is there some RAM shortage? I presently have 1GB RAM. Shall i increase it to 2GB??

Awesome tutorial Matt smile.gif

Good days, You are sure developing your skills. I just love that model and surrounding, very well done. I have one little hint, to improve realism, if you haven't finished the model yet, or you did, this might help, the front weel could use a nice rubber texture? Give it a try smile.gif

Great work man,

John

hey ... thanks there John. yeah i'm searching some rubber + leather textures on google for the tyre as well as seat. In my next post, i'll perhaps put the textures.

Well... just to inform , i have left the class where i was learning 3ds max. it's been more than 3 months since i left it. i'm looking for somewhere else.

You could try adding an optimize modifier to the object before duplicating it, see if that decreases the amount of polys for you. I get the same troubles with really intense scenes.

yes it will adaptively reduce the polygons without losing detail.

And The multires modifier will reduce the polycount and keep the UVs intact, good if you have already textured an object with bitmaps.

yeah... it's gr8 varnished...... i used it on this rickshaw and it greatly reduced the no. of polygons. I'll have to check the Max reference for Optimizer modifier's sub -options. thanx.

Looks good but there are a few things that might be worth doing to improve it. First of all, I think the back one is floating off the ground a bit, there's a big gap between the wheel and the shadow. And there's a slight intersection between the wheel and the guard. Also, maybe add some more details like a footpath and maybe a street light or something, just to bump up the realism a bit. It's a great model, I think it deserves a great scene to go with it.

yeah... thanx Steve , u have pointed all those mistakes which i also saw but after taking the screenshot. I placed a Target direct light and used v-ray, but what i don't understand is how come the last one is looking like it's in air. well, i'll check it again. i'll rectify the guard and wheel mistake.
I made the street lights but removed them as the render was not coming proper.... i mean if i wanna make a night scene... then how shud i glow the street lights?? whcih type of light shud i use?? Omni or spotlights?? thanx.

+Steve Martin
Moderator

It depends on the street light. If it's just pointing down then probably a spot light, if it points everywhere, then an omni. Also, you'll want to turn inverse square falloff on in your light settings. A glow can be added in your effects panel.

Looks nice. Follow Gustave's hints smile.gif

My two cents:

Take a good look at the camera angle you use. if this will be the final position, be sure to give people something to look at. the more detail, the more eye-candy. You have done a great job on the rickshaw vehicles and i admire your work for that. It looks fantastic. Be sure to watch scale, this has great impact on scene realism.

The enviroment, could use some more detail. maybe add some sidewalks, puts, maybe ther's a trash can to. add some detail to the sign, maybe it has plants growing around it, or add some metal textures to it. try not to overuse textures, because this results in a messy, unrealistic render.

Try to imagine how it would look with more objects in your scene. but be sure, when you add one, to increase the detail on it smile.gif

I really like the way you have placed the rickshaws, though as Gustave said, keep watching the ground and other colliding objects smile.gif

For the rest, I love this sunny image.

Keep up the good work,

John

thanks john for highlighting those essential points....... i too thought of some plants & trees. i'll work on it.. The sidewalks and footpath is a great idea.
i'm finding problem with the road texture .... i saved some good road pics from google ... but when i do the tiling, the road divider, as u know(the white patches on the road) too become multiplied..... so is there any good way to use the road texture ?? thanx for the advice.

i guess perhaps Steve and varnished, u didn't get my question. I was asking that for my purpose i need only one row of the white patches on the road. i don't need them multiplied but when i do the tiling they obviously get multiplied...and if i don't, the road image looks stretched.... So what i'm asking is that what can i do so as to show one row of white markings on the road and the image too should not be stretched. Did u get me?? If not plz tell.. I'll explain it again...

Thanx wan..yeah....i don't understand what the problem is. The rickshaw tyre looks as if it's floating in air in the 1st pic.... depsite all the settings being correct(Lighting, shadows). The path too - it's half part shadow is visible but the rest half , there is no shadow.
Well, in the 3rd pic, i changed the direction of the light and it's target too....so the shadow of the rickshaw is proper but the path has the same fault.
