I'm not sure what the requirements and accepted formats are for an avatar.
I tried uploading a small jpg 80x80 but it was rejected.
Could we add some text to the "add avatar" section?

Good suggestion. I think any size is allowed, but it must be a png. Did you get an error msg?

Nope jpg. I even use a batch formatter that can even strip off meta tags.

That is very strange. Can you please try renaming the file and uploading again. If it still does not work I think we may have found a bug. Please let me know.

It must be a jpeg jamie. With a filename like hello.jpg

Did it actually fail with an error or did it just not update in your browser? The downside of speeding things up so much is that there are rediculous amounts of caching going on server side. Sometimes it doesnt want to play nice.

Isaac, you may have to crtl+f5, its is a caching issue. I have to figure out a way to solve this.

You're right. It was my browser holding the old image... I feel dumb.

There is a warning about this above the avatar upload thing on the account settings pages. Maybe the text is to small.

Well I tried updating it when the site launched, but nothing happened, so I waited. I don't think it was a lag issue.

Yeah essentially you have to wait until a cron clears out the cache. It can take a while sometimes. With all the images and drop shadows generated on the site we kinda need caching. This is the price you pay. I'm sure we will find a way to improve it.

As far the browser issue I had, bb forums avoid this problem by saving each avatar uplaod with a random set of characters:
h5b32k2mb3b.jpg
3jkwjn3n2j33n.jpg
32j32h3h2k2hj.jpg
I guess it doesn't matter what the file name of an avatar is since our names are always posted somewhere nearby.
