Hey, not sure if you guys remember me but I was on here a month or so ago with my last 3d project. I passed, if anyone wanted to know tongue.gif

Anyway, now its my Dissertation. Bascially, the idea of my dissertation is for me to model an environment (I've decided to do a church, with a Devil May Cry theme), and I will then texture it using two different types of textures (ones created from photos, others created using computers)

Anyway, at the moment I'm focusing on modelling this church. I used an image of a church to get an idea for the structure of the tower, and the rest of it has been created from my mind. I decided to put a "Master Sword"-esque Force Edge sword (if you've played DMC) where the cross would usually go on a church. Anyway...

I'm basically looking for any tips or ideas people can give me to add to it. I'm going totally creative so theres not too many rules, but although I've been using 3d Max for a while I still dont feel all too experienced with it so I cant guarantee how much I can do.

Anyway, here's where I've gotten to so far:

[IMG][Link to img72.imageshack.us][/IMG]

[IMG][Link to img72.imageshack.us][/IMG]

I threw that Force Edge pic in just because I'm relatively pleased with it, and its the only real DMC thing in there so far tongue.gif The idea being that this would be part of a level, which would involve fighting on the church grounds, fighting inside the church and eventually leading out onto the roof for, you guessed it, more demon slaying. Its a very loose concept but basically my aim is to make it look as nice as possible, before texturing it.

I'm not going to mess with the colours at the moment - although it would look nicer, it would probably make it harder to distinguish seperate parts for the moment. I intend the big circular areas on the main building to look like stained glass in the final thing.

Thanks! Don't be too harsh ;p

Thanks. I'm really stuck with what I can add to it, perhaps to make it look more gothic, or give it more of that 'Devil May Cry' feel.

gothic architecture usually consists of a lot of sharp, pointed structures, as well as support structures that will usually not be seen with classical churches, etc.....for example, if you look at the notre dame cathedral, you will see buttresses on the outside (those are what the supports are called)
anyway take a look at this pic, and use it as a guideline....just think pointed, sharp and unusual smile.gif

Do you have a poly limit? If not, you might really want to go nuts and model details into your scene. The more you can add, the easier your texturing job is going to be.

OK so I've tried adding a bit, that I'm unsure of. Obviously I'd make it look a little more detailed if I go through with it, but I've added a section on the side (inspired by a part of Notre Dame)

What do you think?

Taper the buttresses, with some curve thrown in...... it should get smaller in width as it gets closer to the main structure.....
or use proboolean like jamie said....you can do something like this in less than a minute....

Thanks for the tip on the shape, it looks good.

How do ProBooleans work? I'm fairly experienced with Booleans but never touched ProBooleans.

Pretty much exactly the same, but the processing results in alot cleaner geometry.

Does 3DS 8 support this? I'm using 8 rather than 9, sadly frown.gif

Anyway, some new shots, with new buttresses and a balcony:

I'm really looking for details to add now, little touches to add realism etc. Sadly my mind keeps pulling blanks.

I'm playing Castlevania which is nice and gothic, hoping to pick up some ideas ><

Here's a simple way to add a bit of detail:

1: Start with a cylinder with an even number of sides. Convert to editable poly, delete the end caps and select every second edge. (Use the loop edges option to speed things up)
2: Extrude the edge inward
3: Bend 180 degrees
4: Collapse the bend modifier, and shift drag the edges down. Add a turbosmooth modifier if you want.

Then you've got a fairly simple arch that you can put over a door or some windows, and extruding edges can be a quick and easy way to add detail in other areas.

How do I find the option? I'm really a fish out of water when Im using functions I've never used.

On another note, do you think it looks better with buttresses on both sides? Or better as it was with just the one?

Good luck with the texturing, that's where you're really gonna bring it to life.
