I'm getting really frustrated with this topic, having tried various tutorials but to no avail.

Basically I need to texture/add materials a character, and I've heard the best way to do this is with Unwrap UVW, then use that to render a template, draw over that in photoshop and apply it as an image. I just cant get the mapping right for anything other than a simple box object.

So far, for my character, the best I've got is using UVW Map and Texporter following this tutorial - [Link to www.highend3d.com]

However, the problem with that is that it gives my characters "back" the same texture image as the "front", and because the Mix only has options for 2 bitmaps, I dont know how to map a 3rd to the back of the model, if that makes any sense. I got this using that and a very basic image-

Doesnt look amazing but unfortunately its the best I can get so far. That would be fine but as I said, the back of the model has the same image as the front, so I suppose I just need to get a 3rd UVW Map just for the rear of the character, then render a template for that within Texporter?

I think I need a good tutorial, does anyone have a link to any which are easy to follow? I just cant seem to get my head round it at the minute, its so confusing.

edit - I think I may have figured it out now.

It looks a little flat though, how can I make it look more 3d and detailed? I guess its just a case of drawing more detail/adding texture to the bitmap which is applied as a material? I'll work on it I guess.

I'm working on a tutorial to show some basic Unwrap UVW stuff. You may or may not find it more useful than textporter. I should have it uploaded soon.

Well I ended up just using Unwrap UVW in the end as I found Texporter to do pretty much the same thing. Look forward to seeing that tutorial, I guess it'll be better than the bodge job I figured out myself!

Texporter was the way to go before unwrap uvw got the render uvw template option making texporter redundent. There is alot to unwrapping and understanding uvs but if you are happy to just paint onto a planar map from the front and you are having the problem of it being the reflected on the back. you could just use the automatic mapping option "back/front mapping" to map your whole character back and front on the same texture page. its under normal mapping in unwrap uvw.

I tried to upload the tutorial a couple of times and it failed for some reason, I'll try again later.
