Hello, I wanted to model Pokoyo just as a learning exercise for modeling simple characters in 3D Max. My question is: what's the recommended way to model the entire character (I was told it should be one object)? And its feet or fingers (rounded shapes based on rectangles)? I know how to create the primitive objects in 3D max (like cubes) but I don't know how to then round them off or how to make an entire hand.

You can see a picture of Pokoyo here: [Link to h1.vibeflog.com]

p.s. I'm not interested Pokoyo's clothes details (zipper, etc).

Any tutorials out there for beginners about this?

My objective is to later add a skeleton and animate the character.

Thanks,
Vera

This tutorial here is generally accepted as being pretty awesome:

It should give you a good idea of what's involved in Character modelling.

There are few methods out there you could try shape (cube, cylinder) modeling.
Which is basically making shapes then going to edit poly mold them into your desired limbs and what have you and put it all together.
Then there is plane modeling (not sure what it's really called) but that's where you take a plane and place it in your desired spot (cheek/neck/body or whatever) you want then extrude segments off of that and wielding pieces together until you get your desired result.

Normally I use a combination of the two, I use the shapes method for the body and Plane method for modeling any kind of detailed head.
Key is to have front/side/optionally:top views of the character in your scene and moving vertexes to their appropriate places like you where molding clay into a sculpture digitally.

For Pokoyo there I would use a : spherified : (this is a modifier) cube for his head and Cylinders for the rest of him from his fingers down to his shoes.
Edit: here's a good tutorial:[Link to www.highend3d.com]
