Hi everyone,

Basically I want to be able to create a 3D walk through of a town square. If i were to go to this location and take several photos of the streets and buildings, is there a way that i could create simple 3d models in Max and then use these pictures to overlay on to the models as a photo realistic texture?

I have seen something similar to this done by someone before, but i am unsure as to the correct steps (process) and techniques i should be using. I have searched google but not found what i am looking for.

Would anyone be able to point me in the right direction as to more information or tutorials on this matter? Any help would be much appreciated.

Many thanks,

Dovey.

I guess it's possible, but unless you're really tall or have a ladder, the textures are going to be distorted by the perspective. There are programs out there that can create 3d models from photos, maybe it's worth looking into that option.

I've had to do alot of that very thing recently for a surveying company. i just went out and took as many photos as I could trying to avoid cars in the way and trying to get as little perspective distortion as possible, i built very simple buildings out of boxes roughly in the shape of each building and then mapped each face one by one. I made some generic textures from the photos that could be re-used but most of them were cropped then corrected for perspective using the photoshop transform tools and then mapped onto the appropriate side and level of the building. for example I made a horizontally tileable texture for the ground level, then a tileable set of windows for the middle part and in some cases another one for the top part of the building. heres a screenshot of the early stages.

That's an awsome example.. you think you could do a mini tute on how to incorporate a building texture to a box? A simple one so that our friend here can get a good idea on how to get his project on the move...

Don't want to try to "pop" real world objects into 3d. Instead think of each photograph as an element you will apply to a small part of the model. Each photograph should be processed through photoshop. Then using photoshop plan out your texture maps. Another words, paint out an entire side of a building using these elements, then use 3dsmax to extrude off this image. Then go back and make corrections.

Than you both for your quick responses. Tyson, is there any tutorials you know of that would be good for me to take a look at with regards to this technique. Purely from a 3ds Max stand point. I work using Photoshop so manipulating images isn't an issue.

Thanks

I'll try and do a simple tutorial. So is it simple modelling and uv mapping that you need help with?

Yeah, that would be great. Thanks very much Tyson.
