I didn't touch it myself yet but just browsed the Blender site ( [Link to www.blender.org] ) a bit and man - what an inspirational stuff there!

It seems to be able to do about anything the (costly) apps can do only for free.
I heard that it has a rather unconventional user-interface but 'different' doesn't implicitly mean 'bad' right?

It also seems to have a very active community producing some pretty amazing stuff with it. Not only stills but also links to (downloadable) animation-shorts (open movie projects) and games ( [Link to www.blender.org] ).

They also started a new open movie project 'Durian' with a team from various countries. All info on this @ [Link to durian.blender.org]

Even if you're quite comfortable with whatever app you now use, the site's still worth visiting.

hehe. I take it this is the first time you've heard of it?
I've considered trying blender out but I'm still learning max.

Well I took a look at it in it's early days (I even think it was a DOS version) and saw it mentioned here and there through the years. But it pops up now more and more and thought to explore it more. And got enthusiastic from the things I saw on the site.

I'm normally not so much of a 'nationalist' but the fact that it is actually developed in the Netherlands adds a -cool- factor wink.gif smile.gif

And who knows by mentioning it who it can help in her/his creative explorations smile.gif

I'll have to look into it further. It attracted me because it has a built in sculptor and it's got a decent rendering system. But 'if I like it better', is the question. Which can only be answered by me downloading and trying it. At the moment I have no time.

I have tried blender, if you are used to max or maya you will have a very hard time learning it.

being used to other programs, i think blenders interface is a bitch and i couldn't get past it so i gave up. it can do good things sure but its no better than anything else.
and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

Sure understand what you say of course but don't forget: for anyone who cannot afford the programs a lot of people got used to working with professionally daily - an app like this with these capabilities which is free is indeed 'better than anything else'.. because else that's what they have - nothing.

And that could be just what's needed to get them started expressing themselves creatively.

I've recently been working next to a guy who uses it and I must say I was really impressed with what it could do. He got some awesome results out of it. I can't really comment on how easy or difficult it is though as I didn't use it myself.
