We've had this new section for a while now, and it hasn't really taken off too much. Anyone got any ideas on how to invigorate it a bit? I was thinking of maybe having some small photography challenges. Nothing to advanced, maybe just something like we come up with a theme and people then interpret it their own way in a photo or series of photos. It wouldn't even have to be for medals or anything, just a chance to take some interesting photos of things that you might not usually take photos of. Any thoughts/ ideas?

sounds good. I would love to get into photography but my dinky canon cybershot feels a tad limiting in the area of "art" photography.
still, I'll enter something if a challenge is made....

Yeh, I've only got a couple of mid range digitals myself. It is a bit limiting, but don't let it hold you back.

I'd ought to drop some snaps of me in now and then but my internet has been playing cards with me lately smile.gif

I think this section could grow very large though.

I don't consider myself a photographer. I have a camcorder that snaps stills, what I think of as a secondary function of the camera. It does okay if there is plenty of light.
That said, I will participate if you come up with something fun.

How about a series of insect or bug photos, any kind of creepy crawly thing. There are so many forum users in different parts of the world it might be interesting.

*WARNING: Useless Science Below*
It is estimated that there are 20 to 30 million species of insects (estimate includes those not yet known to science), out of these only around 920,000 have been named by science.
In comparison there are only around 4,000 species of mammals and around 9,000 species of birds. (Not counting Bigfoots, Sasquatch, Yeti, Chupacabra whatever is swiming in those Scottish Lochs etc..)
*End Useless Science*

that is some interesting useless science chris. Some insects are so frakking alien. I found a leaf on my way home the other day covered in some bizarre flouro blue slugs. probably plotting world domination or perhaps about to use some humans as hosts. I'll be in the insect photography thing. but it does require at least a vaguely decent lens to get macro shots

i take a lot of photos but i have no idea what i'm doing. quite often i am guilty of taking cliche myspace pics of myself hehe.

anyway heres a pic where I broke gravity.

and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

that's an interesting snap but for some reason to me it looks very stable, and like it's fairly obvious that a setup like that would balance! i don't know why maybe i played too much of that crayon game!
anyway tyson yeah i, too, have only a modest lil cybershot to compete with, but i think bugs is an interesting subject!

It does look odd.

I was thinking of having a set time for these challenges, say 1 per week, and we all vote on the best one. The winner then gets to choose the theme for the next week. The question is, do we keep it unofficial, just in a single thread, or do we make them official challenges and use the voting system? Thoughts?

Using the challenge system will keep it more organized, but I like the idea of submitting image collections in a single challenge entry. As you know the challenge system won't allow for submitting image collections.

I suppose if we have a challenge where you only enter one image we could use the challenge system. If there is a case where you want a collection to be judged then we could start a thread.

I guess we could just have a massive ongoing thread. We'd need fairly strict posting rules so it stays on topic and doesn't get too messy.

Since we've got a few more photographers here now, is anyone keen to get this started? I'll set a theme, we all take pictures of said theme and the best one gets to choose the next theme. The person who picks the theme chooses the winner and you're not allowed to pick yourself. That way everyone gets a go. How does that sound?
