well dont expect to see much work from me the next week or so, my raid controller failed and resulted in multiple harddisk failure, loss of 300gb of data, including my 3d work. now i am trying to recover it on a super slow pc, so i hope i will be successful in doing that. but if it will, it will certainly eat away alot of time.

Bugger. Good luck recovering all your work, I'd hate to see you lose all that stuff you've worked on. I know I'd hate to lose all mine. You've been having a few technical issues lately, you know what's causing it?

apparently it was the RAID controller, it had a huge black-brown burnt area.
and i was able to retrieve most of the lost data with a new raid smile.gif

Hope your not using RAID 0 or any of the other fragile RAID configs... Are you using it for backup redundancy or speed?
... or did you think I was too stupid to know what a yoogoogoly was?

i did use raid 0, i used it for speed, but after it crashed i threw away the RAID controller and put both hard disks on normal IDE slots in another pc. then using recovery programs to extract the lost data and formatted both disks since i got rid of the RAID.
after that i reinstalled windows and 3dsmax ofcourse smile.gif

Ahhh... wise choice I reckon (ditching the raid 0). It's a wonderful thing for speed (I use it at home for my swap file, games, heavy apps, etc.) but scary for data backup. Nice work on recovering it all. Sounds like you'll be back in business in no time smile.gif

My boss wants to use a raid for our servers at work (for backup) would you advise against this? If so why?

Backup is another matter... Probably using RAID 5 or one of the better newer types. RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks: just a means of getting all disks to play nice together. You can either get them to act as one big HDD (e.g. RAID 0), thereby increasing the speed, but this means that if one dies then everything on the RAID array is lost frown.gif Something like RAID 5 also uses the other drive(s) for duplicating the data, so if one dies you can always look to the duplicates for the backup. The problem with the latter is that you need to buy more HDDs tongue.gif. So I'm sure your boss will be going for something like that for security reasons. If you have the dosh, RAID is the ultimate....

We are getting 2x250GB + 1x500GB and will probably use RAID 5 to mirror the 250s as live disks and put any non critical data (historical data) on the 500.

This server is going to be a beast. We got some more quotes today, and it looks like this is what it will be:
1 x Dell 2RU Rackmount Server
2 x Quad Core Xeon 2.0GHz (yes 8 cores!!)
4 x 1GB Buffered ECC Ram
2 x 250GB WD HDD
1 x 500GB WD HDD
RAID Controller
Gigabit Ethernet

You too can own one, for the low, low price of 1 soul (or $6000, which ever takes the highest value).

Its more than likely we will be shifting maxforum onto this beast aswell.

So are we moving everything to this new server? Cool man! Eventually we will need to get our own server for this place. But not just yet.

Woah! That's uber smile.gif So RAID 5 sounds like the big contender nowadays... v. cool. Unfortunately the RAID controller and HDDs alone would cost me more than my soul is worth; it's steadily decreased in value after I floated it on the stock market.
