I put this together as a full example of making roots. I was pressed for time. The image over-all is fairly dark. I was trying to get the cage part dark so the hand wouldn't look like they are just sticking there by themselves. Give me your opinions. I almost think it needs more roots branching off to really fill in the gaps, maybe zoomed out a little and then brightened up. I think I might even take the tree into ZBrush when finished to give it more shape and texture.

nah, i like the mood, dark is fine, but you could add some of those tiny hair like roots, don't know how to name them haha

Yeah, I like the dark too, I think you could add a little moonlight or something and still keep it nice and shadowy. Maybe just a few moonbeams to add some highlights to the roots.
Ground fog maybe?
I really need to force myself to do some cool organic stuff like this.

What funny is, when I changed the materials, it went from a 10 min render to a 5 hour render. Drives me nuts when your not sure exactly how it is going to look until 5 hours later...lol.. Thanks for the comments.

yeah i know the feeling, when i rendered that kitchen interior, it took 15-16 hours and at the end i realized that my walls had holes in them haha and light was penetrating everywhare

well i accidently set bounce in mental ray's fg to 4 instead of 1-2 so probably that was the reason why it took so long, but it doesn't matter, it was worth it

I added some fog in photoshop and darkened and lightened some areas. Plus I took out the eyes. I tried moon rays, but at this point it made it look grainy.

i love the darkness and the whole mood of the render dude.... and it's so simple yet haunting.... man i like this better than all your previous work!

photoshoping in that fog was a mistake in my opinion, looks unrealistic now, the fog is to strait and a little to gradient, second image is my favorite, i would recommend that you try to break the fog up a bit, little less in some areas and little more in another, also lowering it a bit to the ground, it looks like it's hanging to much in the air.
I liked the eyes too, they added that spooky and creepy feeling to the image which suited it great.
