Hi, I know I've already posted a topic on the same project, but I thought it best to post a seperate topic for a different issue since some people may know about one thing but not another.

Anyway, I was wondering if there is any good method to making a firey glow effect - but not one applied to an animation.

Basically, this project isn't animated, so I'm always working on a single frame. I want to create the effect of a candle, but I'd like to be able to see it from multiple perspectives - therefore it cant simply be added as an aftereffect on the rendered image. I have basically modified a sphere to creat a basic flame-like shape, and wondered if theres something I can apply to it to make it look as though it is glowing.

Also, I have created windows which are essentially planes over hollow indentations in the building. I know how to make planes transparent, but I would like to place some kind of light behind the plane in order to give the effect of candle-light from behind it. What is a good way to achieve this?

I'm not sure whether a single method can do both of these, or whether I would be better off using two different methods - lighting I don't have much experience with.

Thanks

For the flame you should use a gradient ramp map to simulate the colour change of the flame. Check out the image below and note the subtle colour changes. You might also have to use a gradient ramp in the opacity slot. The glow can be achieved using the glow lens effect, found in your environment and effects panel (press 8). When you add the glow effect, go to the options tab, check the object id button and choose the object id of the flame. You could alternatively use the material id of the flame material.

As for the lighting, are you saying you want to simulate candle light coming out of a window?

don't forget to make the material self illuminated. maybe with the same gradient ramp or a falloff map.
for windows it depends on the effect but if you want glowing windows from a distance you can use a map in the self illumination slot
for a closeup you probably want to light the interior and have glass in the windows.

For this house image I made a seperate map based on the windows texture and put it in the self illumination slot and added omnis outside with some attenuation.

Wow Tyson, that house is amazing.

are you saying I should make the window texture self-illuminated? I tried applying an orange colour to the self-illumination checkbox, but it seemed to simily give an orange colour overlay to the image rather than giving a glow effect. Its not a bad effect, but doesnt have the illumination shown in your image.

You have the right idea but you need to replace the orange colour with a map that matches the windows texture. in my scary house image the windows are just boxes with a picture of windows on them, then I made a copy of the windows picture and made all the areas of wood black and the rest a yelllow colour with some variation, just what was there with a bit of a tint and the levels crunched. then that is applied in the self illumination slot. then the omnis outside complete the effect. just remember to turn on far attenuation (decay).
