(3ds max)
greetings
i have been trying to re-create the capital of a Greek column for a few hours now making little headway .. I have tried using splines .. nurbs messing around with edges but i can never get that smooth twisted finish. I was wondering if anyone could point me to a tutorial or quickly show me how to get that twist effect. any help would be much appreciated.

This could be a slow way but it might work. Just model the basic shape of the curl, than cut out the twist in it, select what you've cut and than extrude it. Than you can chamfer is, etc. I'm sure there's a better, quicker way to do it, but I think you should manage it like this.

you have nice reference image there, probably the easiest way to do it would be using splines.
Set your reference image on your front viewport and draw the splines to form the shape, than apply an extrude modifier to splines and extrude it.
You'll need to close the splines to make an extrude, just go all the way around the twisted curve with the splines.
The hardest way would be to box model it into shape.

Isn't there a modifier you can use to push something along a certain path AND shape? I recall seeing it in one of my classes last year. But I can't remember what it was called, maybe it can be used here too.

hm i can't recall it now, but i still think that the splines are the easiest way to go as far i could think off

They are, was just wondering, I remember using it to make the roof gutter (or whatever you call it in English) of a house I modelled for 3D last year, it was very useful. You basically used a spline to get a basic shape, than the modifier generated a mesh to follow that form. (you can than use another modifier to make it follow a path too if you want to) But anyway, doesn't matter lol.
