Carnotaurus Sastrei -
A 25 ft therapod from the Argentinean region in the Late Cretaceous. (Large South American meat eater for those playing at home).

I am actually surprised how similar in feeling this is to traditional artwork I have produced in the past. It was interesting to produce something both so quickly and yet psuedo-realistic. Rather pleased with the results.

Photoshop - 30 mins.
Loose reference used.

I did start with the intent of painting the entire creature, but instead settled for a study of the creatures head which has some interesting features.

I was a little torn between the 2D final and WIP for this image. Although it is a speedpaint, it is also a finished piece. Thoughts?

Yea I would put it in final and in your portfolio man it really is very good. You will see the hide and sticky options next to the topic on the right. Just hide this one and make a new one in final.

Well I hope you're looking for some constructive criticism, becouse that's what I'm going to give to you grin.gif

I like the idea, but I think you should give more work into it. Your light source is kinda hard to get. I have no idea where does it come from. I hope that didn't sound too rough, I'm trying to helo yougrin.gif

just keep working and practicing, and you'll see the canges soon.

And remeber that the red color atracts the eye, so be carefull where you put it.

Keep up man!

The piece is fairly rough around the edges. If I came back to this image, I would put most of the time into the lighting as you were saying. I didn't bother to identify/ establish a light source, but that would obvious been helpful with fleshing out the volume and tone over the creature.

Since my mind is dwelling on these improvements to make, I might revisit this image with a repaint at some stage. Thanks for your crit and comment mate.

Nice design Josh. Ive always liked your concept art style. I would love to see a fully rendered 2d painting ie: The character posed in some sort of environment, light sourcing etc... This image makes me want to get into max and build him.
