For our next 3dsmax assignment at uni we have to create a basic character, rig it and animate it for a minimum of 30 seconds.. anyway we're doing a magician pulling a rabbit out of his hat (hopefully)! I've been working on the musician but its just missing something, and the uvw unwrap didnt go amazingly. Good enough for basic textures but it doesnt look crisp and 3d, its just flat and boring. Any ideas?

I was thinking I might just need to up the detail and texture of the bitmap I'm using for the material/make it look less basic and plain?

Also, the mouth is going to have to be changed to something simpler, as it needs to be animated to show basic facial expressions (ie, movements of the eyebrows and mouth changing shape).. What should I do that with? I was thinking just a box or cylinder like I've done for the moustache and eyebrows.

I would model his mouth into the mesh by extruding then use morpher modifier to create the animation.

Maybe modeling in details such as pockets and buttons etc would make it look more interesting.

Thanks for the suggestions. I think we're keeping the face simple as we just want it to be quite basic whilst still showing changes. I'm going to have a go at animating it soon to see how well it works. This is the character right now. I may try modelling in more detail into the mesh for pockets etc.

What sort of rig are you using? Bones or biped?

We'll be using biped for this.
