A rework of a previous idea I had, prodded by a new Machinae Supremacy song that reminded me of my image.

Anyway I am having trouble with the vray DOF. It seems unless I turn the sampling up to 64 its grainy as hell.

Also I'm thinking the cardboard material is rather fake looking.

I don't think the DOF looks too bad. Cameras in the real world will look a bit grainy when DOF is involved (see image). One thing you could try is to up the global subdivs multiplier in the render panel. This will effect your reflections, refractions, shadows, area lights, GI etc as well as camera effects such as DOF. Remember though, its a multipier so don't up it too much.

Does it look much worse when you turn the sampling down?

Also, yeh the cardboard could use some work. I'd use a photo.

Yeah it was quite bad at 16 and 32.

Heres a comparison of 32 and 64.

Yeh, there's certainly a fair bit of noise there. Do you have to turn it down? Are the renders taking excessivly long times?

Does DOF affect the render times of my GI passes? Because thats whats killing it at the moment.

It took like 12 hours at 800x600, High irradience map. I've since started using a medium irradiance and upped my QMC samples but its still too long. I only have 3 lights.

Don't use high map in vray man it is for animation ... medium or low ... it takes some study to learn how to optimize vray man. I got a vid that might help just remind me.

12 hours - gosh!

I think I would have to go with the 32 myself.

yeah, 12 hours is a long time. I'd render out in separate layers and then stick em all together in fusion or photoshop. Either that or get a quad core CPU. Might be cheaper to do the layers thing though.

I would like a quad... then I could use 3 cores for rendering and still have one core for firefox.

Now if I want to do anything I only get one core rendering, and that sucks.

Is there a way to assign cores to tasks or is it done automatically?

Sure is, bring up the task manager, right click your program in Proceses, go to Set Affinity. You can choose wich cores to run on. So I just normally turn one off in max if I have to use my pc while rendering. Windows knows to make all the other programs use the idle core automatically.

I found a better way is to set the thread priority to low, you can still use your pc without lag, and it doesn't cost much on your render time.
