OK, so this is what I've got so far for the church I've been working on:

I was wondering if anyone had any good methods for creating grass? I've tried textures but obviously they often look a bit flat. The base is a simple flat cylinder - I tried applying a hair and fur modifier but it looked terrible, nothing like grass, but then I'm very inexperienced witht the tool and had no idea what I was doing. The blades were far too large and sparse, and a lot of it was cutting through the planes that create paths, which was obviously undesirable. Here's a shot of my (terrible) attempt:

Any tips?

You can get some good results with the hair and fur mod. you need to adjust the scale and cut length etc.. It can take some fiddling around with lots of settings. Another method I use alot is to scatter a shape. You can scatter anything really like a low res cone or a cylinder but I find that a triangle spline shape with the vertices set to besier corner and a bend modifier makes a good blade of grass.

Heres a super quick description, it probably needs a better explanation though. I'll try and find the tutorial I wrote about it back in Adelaide.

1. Create the closed shape.
2. select all three verts, right click, besier corner.
3. add bend modifier, limit effect so it bends on the top.
4. add an edit mesh modifier (to make it have a surface)
5. select all the vertices in edit mesh and move them up so the pivot point is at the base.
6. choose compound objects scatter.
7. pick a surface to scatter onto. uncheck perpendicular and uncheck display distribution object.
8. increase the number of copies check random and adjust the rotation transforms for some variation.

Tysons scatter technique is the same as mine, looks very very real but can weigh down your scene very quickly. Use it for small or close up areas, and then perhaps displacement maps for distant parts.

Heres an example of what it can look like:

Very convincing. I guess we'll blame whoever made the forum.

I like using VRay Fur to make grass.

Sorry I'm still a bit usure - is there a way to apply the fur modifier to the green cylinder I've used as a base? Or do I need to apply it to something else?

If you use vray, Add Vray fur, make your modifications to it as you see fit, then hide vray fur and add Hair and Fur modifier to your object, set hair coount to 700-800 and set under Multi Strand parameters Count - 20 - 30, root splay - 0.03, tip splay - 2, randomize - 45 ( you should play a bit with these values) and under Render settings set it to Geometry.
That way vray fur will be generated on hair and fur modifier and will add nice random grass. You can set your texture to vray fur and hair and fur, or you can just add it to your object and the fur will use the uvw and texture from your object.

me too, i use vray fur a lot for grassy effects, but if you dont need much detailed grass, you may use vraydisplacement mod, not so hard compared to vray fur.

you can get pretty good results with displacement and nice textures
