My moderator title has the word, "Challenges" in it, so my thought was to spend more time in this forum section.
Here we go!

Mythical Creatures and monsters will make a good challenge because the imagery will draw people to the forum. (We like people) The artist will have more freedom, not being restricted by the rules of real anatomy. This will give you more time to spend on materials and scenery.
I'd really like to do this one! Let me know your thoughts! octo.gif

::edited:: changed "thread" to "forum"

*renamed from "mosnters" to "monsters" octo.gif -v.o.

I'd like to say no rules, only because I can't see any problems.
Trying to think....
No robots, unless there are bits of animal attached?
Nothing that's copyright protected (should go with out say).
Regular animals should be ok since we have some real monsters in this world. But should we leave those for another challenge?
Your thoughts?

Creatures from a myth right? do you think it should at least be limited to something from a recognizable source?. any culture but something from established folklore, legend, or myth. ie: a minataur, a griffin, Bigfoot, lockness monster, Chimaera, mermaids, Dwarves, Medusa etc..

I think it should be free reign, but the creature has to at least make some sort of sense. The concept needs to be sensible and practical. Something that could actually exist, but doesn't.

So no rediculous things like otters with octopuses for feet and zakk wylde's head for a tail.

I agree. But I was thinking of a few restrictions that should go with out say.
"The subject of Dinosaurs, sea creatures, robots, and people (wizards, witches, and lawyers), should be saved for other prospective or past challenges, that focus on these things.
"Plant monsters" may be accepted, but we're trying not to conflict with the prior challenge, "Absurd Plants." Make sure the whole plant is a monster, not just what grows off from it."

If we were to restrict it, what would you want?

I agree with Tyson. Even with the established folklore limitation there is still tons of possible subject matter.
Also, known creatures are open to alot of interpretation and the artist style.

What ever you decide, It will give me an excuse to practice modeling organic stuff, cause I pretty much suck at it.

Maybe this will at least give me the incentive to open max again.

I just think that the subject of "mythical" creatures is almost endless in itself and it has a certain thing about it being based on ancient myths rather than new "fantasy" theres just something lyrical about things like minataurs and Griffins. I guess because there is a history and a story attached to them, almost like they are "real" on some level, like a unicorn, people know what a unicorn should be even though they don't exist, but that wouldnt stop you from interpreting one into a unique design. If it were up to me i would make it restricted to creatures of established myth. something people could recognise from a story or legend but it can be interpreted in any way. I mean you could have a mechanical minataur or whatever you can think of just that it comes from some sort of cultural place. Even if people have never heard of it before like some obscure japanese monster or an indian Gandaberunda for example. the Gandaberunda is believed to possess unimaginable strength. Several depictions have been found in Indian texts and historic art portraying the bird as carrying an elephant in each of its talons and beaks (just imagine the size of the bird!!!)

Would it be bad if we gave people the freedom to do what ever they wanted(edit: with in the mythical creatures parameters)? I wanted to do some kind of hell demon from castlevania or doom3. It wouldn't really fall under mythical creatures, but a monster.

edit: I count 3 people that want "free reign." 4 if you count me...
-desade2009 and you both are on the myth side. I'll call it 3v2... So.... Can I just post it free reign? I'd like to open the new challenge asap.

edit edit: ok now it's 3v3... THANKS STEVE!!!

Isn't this a hot topic. Good idea for a challenge, I like Tyson's idea of keeping it to an established myth. That way we could potentially have different interpretations f the same creature.

Yeah man, constrain it to established myth for this one.

We can save the free reign one for a diff challenge.

Realistic images please!
-Have good lighting: At least have GI turned on if you're not practiced on complex lighting. And include an omni. HDRI lighting using vray might get you frist place.
-If your computer can't handle the fur with
-Before submitting your work, touch up in photoshop! You don't get extra points for doing every little thing in 3dsmax.

DON'T RUSH. Being the first entry doesn’t get you more votes. Good planning and careful work will!

isaac, on the contrary, i wasn't on the "myth only" side at all! hell i'm designing some Uuka, which i've never even heard of, and it isn't likely to be in any myth tongue.gif i'm probably on the free reign side!

and don't need to have complex lighting as a necessity..... things like HDRI, etc....

mythical/non-mythical creatures can look pretty wicked with less lighting rather than more.......designer's choice
