how do you reduce the speckle/noise that occurs in mental ray renders of daylight system?
i've tried changing every parameter there is, but nothing works... i even tried setting speckle reduction to extremely high...
has anyone ever had this problem?
the scene below has 2 mr sky portals with an overall daylight system...i tried an arch&design material override too

btw i was only planning on tweaking the exposure and everything else once the noise is gone....

I'm not really all that cluey with MR so I can't help. The lighting's looking good though. Very natural.

I'm not really into MR either, is there a sampling option you can bump right up?

Try jackin up the shadow samples on your portals.

tried it chris...tried increasing shadow samples, tried increasing processing sampling quality...tried different filters (mitchell, gauss, lanzcos(?)) nothing works...i googled it, other people have discovered this problem...but most of the time it was fixed by changing the lighting from mr area light to sun&sky....mine is already a sun&sky....am baffled....

I there a special reason you are using daylight system instead direct light?
Chris

yes actually there is...i used a direct light and some omnis and made an entire scene out of it, and it looks pretty good....i've uploaded it below...
i wanted to test the daylight system and see if it improved the scene at all, and found that it made an immense difference in terms of lighting....it's extremely accurate, only problem is the grain/noise (which is due to mental ray, not sun&sky i think)...

the second pic is a bit blotchy, (draft render), but i managed to reduce the graininess, but not eliminate it...

In your daylight system > mental ray indirect illumination rollout. Have you tried increasing the GI photons and and Energy.

chris i tried that....i've done some extensive diagnosis on this thing....found the problem to generate from mr sky and mr sun, because i switched it to standard sun and skylight, and had no problem.....i'm guessing the problem is with the shadow samples....except that i had to tone down softness to 0.1....now i have to somehow form a balance between the shadow parameters of the portal, and the daylight system....will keep posting..i hope to nail it by the end of today

Don't say that! You'll jinx yourself and still be working on it next week wink.gif

I wish I could have been more help. but before this thread I had only played around with daylight a few of times.

Even if I couldn't help you out, I did manage to over come my reluctance to use daylight, it does have some very strong points over direct light smile.gif

The "whole vampire-like vibe" slash agoraphobia type thing was an underling thought that I intentionally avoided implying. YOU, are a very perceptive person!
Now I'm not saying that it's true, because I go outside, I go outside all of the time,...really I do. hahaha

I dig your sig! Because there have been moments in my life where I would literally not exist if I had not thought. disbelief.gif
Yeah, I know it's not exactly the same thing, it's true none the less.

haha! i'm hardly perceptive....just pretty morbid and anti-social! grin.gif
i'm sure you go outside smile.gif
i hardly ever get out these days! maybe i'm becoming a vampire slowly tongue.gif that'd be cool

and yeah dude everyday i feel that way....that if i didn't think, i wouldn't exist....in the sense that i'd be a vaccuous shell with nothing inside probably... am caught up in this current existentialist fervour! lol smile.gif

I'm thinking of moving this topic to the deep philosophical discussion section.

Looking good. I think it needs to be a bit brighter though. I liked how hot the sun was in one of your previous renders, there was nice contrast and a realistic sense of film exposure, maybe somewhere in between, with a bit more fill light in the foreground. maybe a low intensity omni with attenuation or a reflection card behind the camera. it looks like you've nailed the grain problem aswell.

i was thinking the exact same thing! that i'd lost the earlier brightness though i managed to gain clarity
so i made some adjustments...the exposure is much more realistic now, and the brightness still remains smile.gif

Yeah that looks very natural. nearly finished? or are you still planning to add more details?

the lighting is done (night as well as day)....that's a huge load off....now just have a little modelling to do (cornices, cupboard shelves, computer wires, cables, etc) which will take about a day or two max.... and then the last thing is to convert reflective surfaces and some materials into arch&design materials or Pro materials.... that's it! smile.gif

great modeling, specially like the lights grin.gif great job, but you should probably move that door handle (knob or whatever) little up.

heh thanks dude grin.gif you won't believe this, but the level of detail in modelling that you see in the pic is FAR LESS than the actual detail i put in!
for example, each of the bulbs in the scene actually has microscopic tungsten-wire-like lofts, and even smaller contacts etc....the guitar's headstock was modelled along with every little screw, bolt, peg etc at the back (which isn't even seen!)...the engravings on the outer frame of the book cupboard i hand-drew using splines....i'm a bit of an idiot that way but i thought it'd give me great modelling practice.... tongue.gif
will post individual renders of all the objects separately in a portfolio....along with the room completed smile.gif
oh and the door handle is supposed to be there man smile.gif it's there in real-life smile.gif

I'm glad you brightened it up again, looks good. I like the way the light hits the TV, excellent CRT material.
I also like the warm diffused glow of this earlier render. It would be great if you could combine that look with the latest render and add some volume light.

I'm looking forward to seeing the individual models. I've been straining my eyes trying to see the guitar and wondering if it was actually detailed. smile.gif
Is that an Ovation maybe?

thanks dude smile.gif
yeah that render you are talking about has a nice diffuse glow but the problem with that, i found, is that for some reason it doesn't take the window grill or the curtains into account....all the light is yellowish, and there are no grill patterns anywhere...
the final render, you will find that the light which streams onto the bed has passed through a very translucent curtain, and therefore the light has changed colour from white to a very whitish yellow.....
plus that earlier render, it seems like everything is covered in a fine layer of dust ! especially the tv!

but yeah will maybe try and put in some volume light smile.gif
and for your benefit, a sneak preview of the guitar's detail smile.gif this model is a very early model of mine, and so isn't very refined, but nonetheless.... even the string diameters are to scale smile.gif 0.009 to 0.042 for all you guitar freaks grin.gif

I have an RG370DX and an RG7321 feels so natural to play them. Other guitars feel clunky or slow in comparison.
