I'm playing around with VRay some. Lighting has always been a weakness of mine. This is the first time that I have messed with VRay materials, so give me your opinions and any suggestion. I'll be working on this some more this weekend. I still have a lot of modeling to do.

Thanks

Love the DOF and the lighting is a good start but it needs a bit more. Maybe try to make it a little bit brighter overall and give it and orangy tint.

I'm not sure, but I think I might need more lighting....lol... I'll tell ya, I've spent 10 times more time working on just the light than I did the modeling.. I'll tweak it some more as I go. I appreciate the comments. I wish I didn't love this stuff so much..lol. One thing I thought was weird, the reflection in the windows shows the light blurred for the candle, but the main object (candle) on the table doesn't show the flame. Can't explain it... I guess that's what you get with Vray. I didn't think I would be able to slow this new computer down that I built the other day, but rending this many Vray material with Caustic's, takes forever...lol

Vray materials shouldn't slow down too much. I think they render faster than raytrace materials. What settings for caustics are you using? And are you using GI and environment override?

Oh, I know what's slowing it down. I'm just messing with some setting. It mainly bogs down when I turn on "V-Ray: Indirect illumination(GI)", with bother Reflective and Refractive GI Caustics checked. It takes it from a 5 min render to a 45 min render.

Yep. Dont use reflective GI man. Its not worth the lag.

Well, I think the lighting is getting better. You can see the texture in the table cloth now. I'm not sold on the material for the silverware though. It stands out too much. Give me your opinions.

Thanks

Maybe make the reflections on the silverware a little more blurred. Also I think the light source should be a bit less saturated and it should probably be coming from the otherside of the table, ie inside the restaraunt rather than outside the window. It's looking good though.

This picture is with the light outside of the window having shadows turned off. The shadows that you see are from the light bouncing off of the glass. That is what the shadow is very faint. I kinda like it this way, with just a hint of bounce shadow. Plus, turning off shadows on the outer light brightens the scene.

Here's a bit more realistic. Fine tuned some of the textures. I've tried to get the silverware to show a little shadow, but you have to get them further off of the table cloth to do it. I used VRay Shadow maps this time instead of just VRayShadow. Anyone for some bread... Crap, you can't eat bread without butter... Ok, next on my list...lol

Give it a try, dont know how it would turn out. Else try adding more loooow powered vray light sources to get more reflections on it, instead of one big blotch.

It's looking really good now. There's something about that silverware that doesn't quite look right. It stands out too much but I'm buggered if I know why.

I'm really starting to like VRay. I've been playing with the setting. I'm gonna practice on a really basic seen. Thanks Scott. To answer your question, when creating the wine glass with the line tool, I created another shape with the line tool and lathe modifier to the shape of the inner part of the glass. Pretty easy.

Yea Steve, I have played with that material the most. I've even made the silverware a little thicker, but no go. I'm not sure if it's just the fact that it is so close to the table that I can't get any shadows showing, or what. I'll keep toying with it until I get it right.

Thanks for the comments.

I think the silverware looks better here but give me your thoughts. I changed up the material a little bit and changed the angle of the light to try and give the silverware an offset shadow, combined with adjusting the light filter and bios setting of the shadows.
