New to 3ds max 2008. Have installed software package on Windows XP machine. Standard instal from what I can gather. Went to render a simple animation in avi but . . . the divx pro compressor is not available as an option. Do i need to install this separately? Any assistance would be appreciated

Generally audio and video codecs have to be installed separately.

Its also not good to render directly to a compressed format.
Normally video compression looks at the frames before and after the current frame, to make choices about compression.
Rather export to an uncompressed format or an image sequence, then convert that to divx!!

Yep, image sequence is your best bet.
