Following Tyson's advice, today I've tried to draw my left hand from real, just by setting it in a particular position and with a bright light behind.
This is my very first drawing of body parts from real, I want your opinions and hints/tips to improve what is my present technique to reproduce lightings on objects.

It looks nice! You also have an opportunity to make it funny, by drawing crude chicken features on to it with vector lines:
Example of what I'm talking about:

LOL!!! XD.gif

Seriously, is that any good? Is it "blunt"? Good contrasts? Right lighting? Colors? ^^

Its pretty good. perhaps your choice of lighting could be improved though. I'd suggest trying to quickly sketch in the volume of each part of the hand. like break it up into cylinders and boxes lightly and quickly. then when you nail the shape and volume begin shading it.

Great trick!!! =D

My fingers are not well shaped, and since I'm a bit fat, they're....ehm....chubby, curvy, giving weird shades. I could improve the basic shaping of the whole hand, though, just for proportions and perspectives.....hmmmm

Any trick like that applicable to real proportioned hands? I mean non-comic-like hands?

Ah!!! Btw!!! Did you read my last reply to the Intuos 4 thread?? I've found a way to workaround the nib-wasting rough surface! =)

Yeah I read that post. thanks for that. but actually the problem kind of solved itself for me, Ive just used it so much its smooth as silk now smile.gif.
The drawing volume thing applies to everything you draw. In a 3d world everything has volume. everything can be broken down into its raw geometry and it helps a lot to aid in both getting the shape right and also seeing the way light would hit the forms. One of my figure drawing teachers at art school would make us draw everything in very loose circles and ellipses focusing in on the volumes of the body. its easy to get the volumes using circular lines, kind of drawing things as if it were a wire frame. then you can gradually harden up the lines when you can see the correct line between all you loose sketchy stuff. After those classes I always start my figure sketches using those sweeping circular lines, somehow I feel it helps you tap into your subconscious ability to observe the forms and get them onto the paper bypassing your logical mind which is thinking more about anatomy instead of shapes.
