Hello my name is martijn and I hafe a problem whit exporting a model from 3d studio max 9 to 8. I modeled this model for a game so it has to be low poly.

My model in 3d max 9 has around the 1400 polys and that is just perfect. Now I need to export it to max 8 because the exporting scripts only work in 3d max 8 and nod in max 9. when I export the model and load it in max 8 there are much more edge's than that I made. and it has a poly count of above the 3600 and that is way to match.

now my question is how do I need to export my model so it don’t become that high poly?

If you are exporting to.3ds format, it will triangulate all of your faces, so if you have quads, they turn to tris. Your exporter probably converts to tris too though, have you seen what the performance is like with the higher count?

I dond really understand what you mean but maby you can help me whit exporting

Usually when you export a mesh it exports as triangles. So if there are any quads in the scene it will slice them in half into triangles, giving you more polys. I think its because most engines natively use triangles anyway.
