Tyson and I have been chatting a bit lately about the posibility of doing some content for Fallout 3 in the nearish future. I just thought I'd see if anyone else might be keen to get involved in any way. We're not sure what we want to do, it depends on how many people get involved and what sort of talents they want to contribute. We're not looking at doing anything too involved like a full mod, but maybe a building that we could put some custom objects in with maybe a trapdoor to a sewer or something. It depends on how many people get involved really, and how much they contribute.
sounds like a cool idea, I've never really done any modding so I may be interested. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
what I heard originally is that they would be releasing an api for fallout. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
i'd love to help out in any way i can......i bought this book called '3ds max modeling for games' and it seems pretty awesome...am planning to get into it once i'm done with my Msc applications (february).... would love to work on an actual game mod
Cogito, Ergo Sum
i'm willing to help if needed, but i have no expiriance in game modeling

i got a dvd with the book, and it includes tons of photos of this abandoned hospital, which is pretty much a wreck....i think it'll be great for fallout, cos of the post-apocalyptic setting....
as for what i'd like to make, anything's cool is it going to be a map (level) or a mod?
don't know, what ever you guys come up with is fine with me, i can provide a 300k poly spaceship model if you want ahahaha just kidding

Hello! I am a fallout modder. Modding for Fallout isn't really hard. there is an editor for it called G.E.C.K.
You can learn that program pretty easy, though it has unlimited options. making custom items in 3dsmax for it can be a little bit irritating, since fallout uses all kinds of compressed textures and collision files. So you need to go use some other little programs aswell
Yeh, I'v got the GECK. It's pretty similar to TES Construction Set for Oblivion only with a few extra features. I used TESCS a bit and nifskope, the program that handles all the collision etc. It can be tricky, but I'm sure we can achieve something.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
yeah i was reading about the G.E.C.K. [url][Link to geck.bethsoft.com][/url]
will have to start learning how to use it etc........just got fallout 3 so will first play it of course
How about this mod it is simple. Fawkes goes in a dies at the end and you get to live. haha sorry still really pissed at this game. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
Yeah, I wish I'd just not attempted the main story, I'd probably still be playing it, but now I'm not that motivated to go searching for stuff in the wilderness with no real purpose.
I feel like it would have been cool to have some areas that were just so hardcore that you would really need max out your character to even stand a chance. something hidden deep in the wastes. some monster thats like 50 times bigger than a behemoth. I'm sure thats well beyond the scope of this but anyway.
there would need to be some purpose to whatever we were to create. a special weapon to find or a horde of impossible monsters (like a whole camp of behemoths) in a setting that is unusual for the world. a bit like oasis or something.
The first idea I had for a mod was actually an oasis - somewhere that wasn't affected by the bombs. I wasn't sure how to make it seem realistic though. I mean, why would one little section be spared?[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
I was hoping there was some far off place that was lush and tropical when i began playing and when I found the oasis at the very edge of the map up north i was glad there was something like that in the game, did you find that place?. the story being that some of the geck chemicals had been found and caused some guy to grow into a tree, a religion spawned from it. It was cool but it wasnt quite what I had in mind. what I wanted was for there to be a G.E.C.K that actually did terraform the place or at least a large chunk of land like a reverse nuke or something.
I haven't seen it, no. Makes sense though. We could do something along those lines, just concentrate on custom terrain and plants etc.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
how about a real gratifying mission?
i like the oasis idea, but wouldn't that be too open? it'll be more of a brawl than something that requires even a little strategic thinking....
maybe we make it such that, in the beginning, you have to be real strategic and resourceful, in order to even live... we throw in a horde of near-impossible monsters, and we give the player a measly amount of ammo, and a mid-range gun.....once he/she gets past the clutch of monsters, the player will then be able to access a kickass gun and loads of ammo, and we throw in more monsters and make it an open setting then, where the player can have fun just blasting the damn things...he/she would've earned it!
i haven't played fallout 3 yet,so i don't know how scary it is.....but how about the initial 'odds-against-player' phase being really scary? like Alien (movie).....dark, menacing corridors, maybe lights that flicker on and off, and monsters lurking everywhere.....i know all this is a bit ambitious, but hey, why not
Cogito, Ergo Sum
another end-level scenario.....player trapped on a rooftop, hordes of monsters below (unable to get into the building)....there's a golf-club and a stock of golf-balls on the rooftop....(custom weapon)....the player can play golf, hitting the balls into the sea of monsters....except each golf-ball is a grenade.....that'll be the ultimate satisfaction
i think i got that from dawn of the dead
I think we should try something small at first, I don't want to have it dragging on for months and months creating complex monsters and quests. If we can achieve something relatively simple first, maybe we can try something a bit more complex after that. The hospital is a good idea, but maybe something even more simple than that. I haven't played Fallout 1 and 2, is there anything from those that we can do? Also, anyone keen to do some concept art? [Link to www.3dprevis.com]
If you're looking for simple, yet creepy settings, we can try a cathedral (that was the last quest in fallout 1 btw), a hospital, a factory etc....it'll be easy to do with the g.e.c.k. because most of the objects needn't be custom.....
i was looking at Jamie's corridor image, and that really inspired me.....shifting floors, very minimal lighting, and simplicity
Cogito, Ergo Sum
The Cathedral is a good idea it would have the potential to look awesome.
It seems that people have some good ideas that go beyond just a building so how about this:
We do it in three stages.
Stage 1: Create a main building or area and other custom models.
Stage 2: Create custom creatures to fill the building with.
Stage 3: Some sort of quest that involves the building and the creatures.
That way we can concentrate on one thing at a time and if we finish it successfully and are keen to do more we can go ahead with it, otherwise we just let it go. I just thought that this way would give us the best chance of getting something finished.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
Probably only one person needs to learn how to use the GECK, it'd get confusing with too many people working one one layout. Everyone else just needs to know how to model and texture. I'm still confused about what and API is and what it's role is so if someone could explain it to me that'd be great.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
API = application programming interface, and generally consists of the necessary modules, programming structures, libraries, classes, etc which are used in order to build an application using a certain programming language..... its role is to allow you to create applications, or programs, which are then compiled and executed.
so basically it's like something that forms a framework within which applications can be developed.....
P.S. example : java.io is Java's Input-output API which consists of all the class definitions, functions (called "methods", etc that would be useful to anyone building an input-output application, say, like a Word processor
well, programming isn't really required if what you're looking to do is create a new map (in our case, the cathedral)
but if what you want to do is alter the way the game plays, then you'll need some programming
say, for instance, you want to remove all gravity, or you want to enable players to pass through walls etc, you'll need to modify some lines of code....i'm not sure either (i've never done a mod before) but i don't think you'll need to be an ace programmer to mod.....
anyway i think whoever's involved might need to be atleast a little familiar with the GECK, cos as someone said above, we'll need to create custom stuff based on Fallout's specifications.... so it will help if we model and texture with fallout in mind
Cogito, Ergo Sum
I've been reading this thread since it started and I've been wanting to chime in. I'd like to help out on some modeling, If there is anything you think I can help with just let me know.
I'd love to be a part of it!
Chris
Starting at the beginning of Feb I'm going to be spending about 2 hours a day on public transport a couple of days a week. I'm going to use the time to write up some sort of outline and then we'll take it from there. I'll post it up when I've got something decent. [Link to www.3dprevis.com]
I will be happy to help once me and matt have either finished the post epoc tile game we are working on or give up haha. Please support us and post a [Link to www.digitalartsfront.com] on your website.
Well that would be kinda cool plus with more hands we could achieve a lot more. it is a 2d tile game tho, so not funky fallout looking 3d. We want to focus on game play vs graphics as we do not have millions of dollars. We are working on the lvl editor right now. And we are playing with 2 different style. Look at the buildings in this image, it is kinda toonish hard lines etc. Where are the road has a more realistic feel. We are thinking we will go with the toon feel because at the end of the day for two people to create a sandbox game is gonna take a lot of time and toon is a lot faster. anyone still interested in the fallout 3 content? cos i now have loads of free time on my hands, and it's something i can devote my energy towards
Cogito, Ergo Sum
The traineeship thing that I'm doing at the moment, is requiring more out of office time than I thought it would so I can't really put my hand up to do any 3d stuff, but if anyone is still keen I could do the outline that I was planning to do a while back.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
i'll get started on figuring out the GECK. gerard if you have time do the outline if you can discuss with jamie and get some concept art going, it'll be great!
anyone else? chris, tyson?
I'll go with the cathedral idea, I think that'll be a good one to try. I'll try and sort out what will be needed then we'll see if people are willing to do it.[Link to www.3dprevis.com]
