Well I completed the game and here is my view on the main story.

It sucked ass!

Design Flaws:

Ok firstly I would like to say great game. I barley scratched the surface seen as I played the mains story all the way through and did non of the side quests. I plan on playing through it again and exploring all the content and just saying "hey dad you left me so you can go $^%# yourself".

However, The way bethesda make games is some what flawed. They give you this open world and then push you into a main storyline where you are like where the hell did dad go i must find out .. and off you go on the long and anti climatic main storyline. For example when you are on your way to vault 87 to find the G.E.C.K some kid is like can you take me to big town. "umm... no im kinda busy trying to save the world jack ass"
Why would I help him!! Im in the middle of an important quest and im asked to back track half way across the map for no payoff. WHY!!

I had this same problem with oblivion. Anyways that is a major flaw in the game and if you go into it saying screw you dad and never going down the main storyline im sure you will be better off for it.

Plot Holes:

Im not going to cover the whole plot line here because it would hurt me to much to do that. But for those of you who have finished it these are some major plot holes I found.

G.E.C.K: Why in the hell would you use a teraforming device designed to remake the world to fix a water purifier??? Answer me that bethesda! Not only that but in the end of the game you dont even have the device and there is no way anyone could have installed it anyways seen as the plant was full of radiation thanks to good old dad. This is one of the most retarded flaws I have seen in an story in my life.

Fawkes: Why could he not have gone into the chamber? The whole time Lyons was telling me one of us had to go in to the chamber I was like "aghh I see what is going on fawkes will go in because he is radiation resistant and then we will all live, clean water bla bla bla the end." But no! when you ask him to do it he says "bla bla bla your destiny bla bla bla I wouldnt want to stand in the way your great moment bla bla bla".
Not only would this have made complete sense in terms of the plot line but we would have all lived and I could have go back into the world to help the people.. or hinder.

My Demise: So we get to the water place and im like cool we are probably headed towards a climatic ending in the next 3-4 hrs of game play ... so we walk in side kill the boss (with one shot to the head) and then Lyons is like "well that is all taken care of good job lets secure the area". In my head im thinking sweet we fix the water purifier and then continue on with another plot twist. But no we walk up the stairs and she is like "Time out sorry we have reached the end of the game, one of us has to die and even if that person is me you still don't get to keep playing." I was just confused I waled into the chamber thinking ok there has to be some kind of twist like I wake up in hospital or something. But no game over and here is a crappy video made with some screen shots and a sepia/old film grain effect.

I was so disapointed with the storyline and there were so many questions left unanswerd. For example if you read all the vault tech stuff you will see that there was somekind of evil experiment taking place in the vaults but no we wont bother going into that... no that would be interesting.

Anyways I would like other peoples say on this so feel free to rant and rave.

I can't really argue against this until I've played the game my self. That ending however does blow. It screams, 'we're making another one. News flash: you're going to buy it.' Honestly i hated oblivian and couldn't get past 20 min of walking. I thought it would be like zelda or even gta but it wasn't.
From what you describe fallout sounds like another game that i completely hated after it left 8-bit. Final Fantasy was a game where you walked for miles for the sole purpose of finding items and killing 'bad guys," that randomly spawn. I also hate cloud and every emo character like him on the planet.

If you hated oblivion not much point playing this. Same kinda game, as in the same game dynamics. However completely different at the same time.

Ok, I havent read the above posts because I havent really touched the main story yet. Ive just been wandering around doing random quests and finding locations as far from DC as I can get. I'm still really into it but its starting to get depressing at times when your in some dark wet sewer surrounded by mirelurks your over encumbered and you can't figure out the way out. So I've been staying above ground mostly. That and the fact that I'm getting close to the maximim level which seems a bit low, I couldnt be fucked playing it all again and I'd like to just max out all the stats after all is said and done. When you are side questing Look for an irradiated area north of minesfield passed the powerstation along the row of powerlines for a cool random find.

I'll try and finish the story so I can see what you guys mean. I was hoping for an awesome story where you get the G.E.C.K device and greenify the whole world in a maginifent cut scene, guessing its not that....damn...

Oh your close tyson your very close... haha.

Yea man im replaying the game as a evil. Im not doing the main story at all this time untill the very end. Also lvl 20 cap is ridiculous it is like they don't want you to explore.

I hear the side quests and exploration is where the game really shines.

Well just make good use of the quick travel if you don't like backtracking, thats what I did pretty much everytime I went somewhere I had discovered. Not finished the story yet, but from the sounds of it I haven't missed much.

I always do the sidequests first, but in doing that I missed a chunk of the main gameplay (I didn't go to GWR Radio first, but the city-boat thing(mind gone blank on the name) and I was able to advance the main story from that point)

Yeah, i think the same thing happened to me I found rivet city and it seems I can probably skip the radio station bit of the main quest. I think the pursuit of powerfull and unique weapons and finding all the custom weapon schematics makes the whole thing really keep moving along. its very rewarding when you find some random weapon you had no idea existed. I'm not sure I could actually play this game as a bad guy. theres so many times i feel guilty to choose the bad option. there was one particularly zany side quest in the far northern wastes where I chose the option that made me sleep soundly over the better reward, go figure. another example theres a mission where you have to enslave several people, 250 caps a piece but one of the targets is this girl who I just saved from this horrible police station filled with mutants that were torturing and eating people. I just can't bring myself to enslave her now... although maybe I could just release her afterwards and kill all the slavers hmmm....

Yea, I find it hard to play through games as the bad guy anyway, I'm too nice, even in like the KotoR games I had great difficulty playing the dark side.

I've only found the schematic for the railway spike launcher, but not had a chance to make it yet. Its not something I've really investigated, usually I'll play a game once for the story, and then run through a second time for all the sidequests.

Exactly what I do, however I seem to have lost all motivation for playing the game now that I have finished the main story. It is a shame I guess but in a way it is bethesda's fault for screwing up the main story and not letting me continue playing.
