This is my first attempt at a gas cylinder is still is not finished cause i cannot get it how i want i am not really sure how to model things like this there is a lot i do not know about 3d modelling only know how to do the very basics. What do you guys think.

If you was creating a Gas Cylinder where would you start, I started by creating a cylinder then from the top beveling and extruding.

I'd do pretty much what you've said there. The model looks quite good so far, though I'd usually think that the cylinder itself would be a bit longer. However, I'm certainly not the expert diver on this forum so if anyone's going to know about gas cylinders it's you.

Yeh, you gotta chamfer those hard edges a bit to keep them crisp.

I experimented with this on a little. It seemed easiest to make the tank itself with a "SPLINE" and just applying a "Lathe" Modifier. With the nozzle, I found it best to just box model it and applying a "Turbosmooth" modifier. The handle was just made with a cylinder with the cap raised and some verts pulled inwards. Then applying a "Turbosmooth" modifier. Of course, then I stole the label off of your original in photoshop and applied it to the mesh.

Heres something I made a few years ago that had a gas bottle in it.

I just extruded the cap of the cylinder and scaled it in each time.

Then used a couple of cylinders for the nozzle etc.

Spitfire: Thats awsome work it just looks like the picture exactly the same wicked man thanks for explaining this to me i will try and recrate this and post up soon hopefully i dont really know that much about splines but i will give it a good go.

Steve: Thanks for the advice man much appreciated.

Varnished: That awsome aswell kooks really good thanks for sharing this.

When i try and use a spline i use the line tool to create the object its just all nakers up like i will do the bottom curve then try and do the top bit it way out of line lol frown.giffrown.gif. This is what it looks like after the line tool.

The lathe Model looks like a milk bottle lol smile.gifsmile.gif

drawing splines takes a bit of practice to get how it works. Its kindof the same as drawing paths in flash or photoshop.

That's looking better. Here are some tips that I have learned. When making the cylinder, place your main picture on a plane in the background and draw your spline along the edges of the cylinder(See picture #1). You'll have to click 3 times in the locations that you want straight edges. Once you have the shape you want, "Lathe" your spline(See picture #2).

I didn't like the sharp edged it made in the middle of the bottle, so I added a "Turbosmooth" modifier to soften the edges, but that creates too much smoothing at the top of the bottle as seen in picture #3. Add a "Edit Poly" modifier before the "Turbosmooth" modifier and "Chamfer" the edge that you want to be sharp.

I hope this give you a better understanding of how I achieved the look I was going for. Keep up the good work.

Yep, the chamfering of harder edges is very important.

Spitfire thats great thanks so much i tried the bottle again the other day and i chamfered the edges before using the turbosmooth as you explained further up the post and the top went really creased so showing me that is great thanks so much reallu appreciated.

When i add the lathe i get like a hole at the top and i have vertually done same as yours i also have to add the option called shell to fill the rest of the bottom in

thanks everyone for you help and advice.

Nice, those edges are certainly looking better. Maybe just sharpen the bottom one up a bit.
