Hey guys:

Just wanted a general opinion. I have a contact on the movie industry, and he's setting up a meeting with some investors, he asked me to head up the gaming end of the movie deal he's working on. I'd be in charge of leading a group of talented artists to develop this game that is going with the movie deal... What do you think? It's still not 100% well to be honest not even 20%, he still needs to pitch the idea to the investors, but he wants to incorporate it with his package/ proposal... I'm going in circles around this.. If all goes well with the deal, I'd have a budget to hire some people and direct the development of the game... (I'm getting exited just writing about it!).. My impulses say go for it!, but I have in no way shape or form the experience to produce a game, only done minor things and I have nooo idea on how many people I would need for this, or how long it would take to produce it... all I'm trying to say is.. PLEASE HELP MEE!!! AAHHH!!!

Wow, what a potentially great opportunity. Offers like this don't come along every day and you may find yourself regretting it if you turn it down. That said, it will probably be a hugely stressful undertaking and may result in you prematurely going grey or bald (or both - don't ask me how that works). If you said yes, how long would you have to research game development?

JAJA! Im already going bald.. but Ive come to embrace that. I really don't know, it all depends on how long it takes for them to make the negotiations, and then I would have to meet up with them in their studio to see how big the budget is and how much of a deadline we have for the game... I'm sure it's going to be a back and forwards discussion. But just in general, how big do you estimate a good gaming crew would be? 5 to 10? and how long does it take to produce a game on average? 3 years? less? more? I'm guessing it all depends on the complexity of the game, and the changes that are always made...

Depends on what sort of game really and what you and your team are going to be responsible for. If it's just visuals probably 5-10 but if it's the entire game you'll need writers, programmers, sound design, voice actors, music producers, documentation people, testers etc etc. You might be able to look for people with mulitple talents say a writer who does programming or an animator who can produce music which would save a bit of money (while hopefully not placing too much workload on one individual). I guess 3 years would be about average but it really depends on how smoothly things go and probably also on how much input the client wants.

I might be a little jaded but I would just wait untill you get a green light before you worry about this. It is my experience that the people with the big ideas usually flake out. See how it goes on his end before you bother thinking about developing a game for him.

yeah Jamie is probably right. But it would be very exciting. Its rare but sometimes there are wealthy dudes out there who actually do make these things happen. One guy a friend of mine has been doing designs for a guy in Melbourne who is completely funding an animated feature film and making a 3d game to go with it. they are 3 years into it. I didnt believe it was true but he has been getting paid for around a year doing concept art and some models. i say go for it. If it does happen you can hire a few guys that know alot about building a game and go from there right?. smile.gif

yeah, apparently he's a really afluent very wealthy fundamentalist christian and the movie and game all have some grand biblical slant which according to my friend doesnt quite sit right in a science fiction theme. I still almost dont believe the story but Ive seen the designs and they look very awesome.

I just read an article in Edge magazine about a group of Swedish game developers who left a big games company to create their own company. all of them with Director positions TDs designers and programmers. they said that you can make a good game for the xbox 360 with 40 artists. in another article two guys made a platformer for the wii by hiring one really talented programmer and they did the artwork. I guess it depends on the type of game you are making. If you develop a game for xbox live you could probably make one yourself but a full fledged title is going to be a major under taking. What kind of game does this guy have in mind?.

It's a movie-game deal.. much like all of those video games you find right after the movie comes out, I guess the complexity of the game relies on how complex the "theme" is in the movie. But he said that we'll have plenty of references to go by..

Might be worth checking this out, I saw it on a tv show last night:
[Link to www.theinspiracy.com]

It's called the 400 project and basically it's a list of rules to try and adhere to when making a game. Their aim is to get 400 (which seems like an awful lot to me) but currently they only have 112. If you think of them as guidelines more than rules you might find some interesting stuff in there to think about.
