Ok I am going to go with a generic topic.

Now most of us have these games they seem to love to bits, but not many people have played them, or even heard of them. It may not be in your top games list, but you feel that people need to play it. o here is your chance to post up some games you have played that no one else seems to know about that you love!!

Ill start

star control 2

This game is so old it is counted as abandonware so you can download it free all over the place!
[Link to sc2.sourceforge.net]

It is really hard to go into detail about this game as it has so many elements it was way before its time (It is like mass effects great great grandpa)

This game is full of humour, great characters (fwiffo is such a hoot), alien races with great quirks (the shofixti are a race whose military tactic is literally suicide, all there ships are rigged to explode), interesting story lines and a vast galaxy to explore.

You start off as a commander Precursor star ship who is travelling back to earth. When you get there you find humanity enslaved by the evil Ur-Quan and it is your job to free them!!

You travel around finding resources on planets to be able to build a bigger fleet, better ship and to get enough fuel to travel further into the galaxy. Finding alien worlds, talking to different races, discovering their place in to intergalactic war, recruiting allies and fighting off the bad guys!
The game has an underlying time limit, so you will be sure to play it more than once as time is of the essence, and you have a whole open ended galaxy to find everything you need and make the plot connections.

the combat is a awesome arcade style shooter, with gravitational effects and each ship has its own weaknesses and strengths you really have to learn how to use each ship to its full potential and what ship is good against other ships.

This game is easily one of the best games of all time and even though the graphics seem to be a bit outdated, the game play, back stories and storyline are awesome. Unless you have been playing games for ages, or like to look up old classics you would probably have missed this game, but really if your a fan of fun innovative games, this is a must to download!!

Oh did I also mention the great soundtrack, some of the best game music of its era!

It is ok, I wouldn't talk to me either...

First I want to say this is an awesome thread idea.

There are so many games I think people should play that they may have missed. Most of them are indie or casual games. But I will start with this.

Shatter

Shatter is a retro style brick breaking game, with kick ass visuals, boss fights and an amazing sound track. It is available for PC and PS3. This is a must own title as far as I'm concerned.

Woooh that looks kinda cool. It is like a crazy version of break out.

Ok next game (finally remembered what it was called)

Liberation Army:

It is a free game so you can easily download it
(ill find a free link for it)

Ill just use the write up from the site because well.. it says it all really
Liberation Army is a unique and compelling blend of real-time strategy, tactical planning, and shoot 'em up from Japan. Your objective as an army commander is to defeat the computer-controlled opponent by leading your "mechs" and spaceships in huge space battles. The game is a clever blend of turn-base and real-time strategy: every battle consists of two phases, the "Armament Phase" and "Combat Phase." In the Armament Phase, you can take as much time as you want to prepare your forces and recoup losses from the previous battle. Here you can save the current game, refill, repair, upgrade, and buy new units and battleships. In the real-time Combat Phase, you lead your dozens of units in a sprawling space battle. Here, the game is a fun shoot 'em up, but allows you to give commands to your troops at the same time. You win the battle when you eliminate the enemy or make them retreat. On the other hand, if your units are wiped out or retreat, you lose.

Although it sounds simple and your choices seem too few during the first 2-3 battles, Liberation Army is in fact a deeper and more complex game once you are able to buy more powerful weapons and battleships - in time to face tougher fights which easily involve hundreds of spaceships and mech units at once. For example, units attacked from the back may suffer a "critical hit" that does more damage than normal, and tactical planning is key to winning some of the larger battles: should you attack from the flanks, or lure the enemy in? There are numerous weapons to equip your units with, and a variety of spaceships to purchase. My only big gripe is the fact that you need to 'babysit' spaceships in most battles, since they seem almost incapable of defending themselves. But given the thrill of seeing your dozens of units crush the enemy and cool weapon effects, the game is far from tedious.

If you are looking for a fun and unique blend of action and strategy that is rarely seen outside Asia-bound console games, Liberation Army is well worth your time. Originally released in Japanese only, the text has been translated into English by the translation group AGTP.

Any rally fans have to play Richard Burns Rally. It'ss the most realistic rally sim going around. It's very tough to master but very rewarding when you do. It's a few years old now but still looks quite good.

You're posting "low-profile" games while I was thinking of some hardware demanding stuff.....I wonder if you'll appreciate the list I'm going to write down now ^^

#1 - Final Fantasy VII -> RPG, middle 90s japanese style with pre-rendered backgrounds and low-poly characters, but with a heart-touching story and wonderful soundtrack....oh, how I loved it....and still love it!! ^o^
#2 - Final Fantasy VI -> RPG, second place in my heart just after the VII....same thing, but this time you'll have to download a SNES emulator and the ROM ^^
#3 - Black&White 2 -> Kind of RTS, You're a god and your hand on earth will change the fate of your people....awesome gameplay style, to me =)
#4 - GTA San Andreas -> Free Roaming, Do whatever comes up to your mind!! You're totally free to follow the storyline or wander around walking or driving hundreds of cars/planes/elicopters/bicycles/boats/motorcycles/trucks, kill using a dozen of different weapons (including the katana), accomplish races with every type of ride, make tricks with BMXs or motorcycles....oh well, there are hundreds of things to do, in GTA SA, cant list them all....it's a neverending game, if you like to mess around at your will!! ^o^
#5 - STALKER Shadow of Cernobyl ->FPS, Great storyline and they say many places of those you visit are reproduced copying real places around Cernobyl. You're more or less to wander around here too, but the real deal is the atmosphere you feel.
#6 - MAFIA -> TPS, It's really old, and yet....great textures and settings in this classic gangster storyline.
#7 - Oblivion -> FPS/RPG, phantasy/medieval settings, wonderful graphics. I love it cause it's a totally free roaming RPG and for its woods that bring me so much peace ^^ A must have, if you like to visit new places from other people's phantasy!! =)
#8 - Fallout 3 -> FPS/RPG, Same producers of Oblivion and thus same gameplay style, but a totally different setting as you're in a post-atomic era...just....wow!
#9 - HalfLife 2 -> FPS, Astonishing prerendered textures for this fully 3D game! The storyline really "takes" you and settings give you such a loneliness feeling, like the whole human genre has been kidnapped or transformed in something else....just play it!
#10 - Lucas Arts Series: The Dig, Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis, Monkey Island 1 and 2, The Day of the Tentacle....all point and clik games with carrying and some laugh-to-death storylines and scenes. Download the free Virtual SCUMM emulator, to play them on modern systems.
#11 - Edge of Chaos - Independence War 2 -> First Person Space Ships, Great storyline and some realism in ships driving, meant to be a must have with hundreds of planet systems to visit, you're totaly free to follow the missions or just wander around at your will with your space ship attacking everything and stealing space convoys. Pity they didnt continue the series....
#12 - Machinarium - Java Point and click adventure (not free), Hand drawn backgrounds with an incredible soundtrack!! You artists will love it! ^^ Check the site here [Link to machinarium.net]

This is it, at least for now.... ^^
No Gods but Yourself!! >.<

Though your list isn't bad, the point of the topic was to let people discover games that they wouldn't normally. hence has I said "but not many people have played them, or even heard of them". I think almost everyone knows of FF7, GTA, Fallout, Oblivion HL2 etc.

BUUUT saying that Edge of Chaos - Independence War 2 is a game I am not sure many people have played! I do love my space sims and this is defiantly a decent one! They physics engine is quiet decent, I love inertia based combat XD.gif

Ok going to post another one. This one you may know about as it seems to be kinda popular in some circles.

Warning Forever

The game is broken into stages; each stage is a single boss battle, resulting in a constant stream of bosses. To progress to the next stage, the boss must be completely destroyed within the time limit. The main gameplay feature is the boss's change from stage to stage. Based on how a boss is destroyed, the next boss will adapt itself to defend against previously used strategies and force the player to change tactics. For example, if the front section of one boss is destroyed the next boss will have increased armor in that area. If the player's ship is hit by a certain kind of weapon, but still defeats the boss, the next boss is likely to have more weapons of that typ

The game starts with a default time limit of 180 seconds, with 30 seconds rewarded for every boss defeated and 20 seconds lost for each time the player is destroyed. The player flies a relatively small green ship. There are no power-ups - the player's only weapon is a very rapid-fire revolving cannon which is fired by holding down the shoot button (Z key by default). By default, it fires straight ahead with a small spread. Alternatively, after the switch button (D key by default) is pressed, a green arc is displayed originating from the ship and widening as distance increases. This arc represents the spread of the weapon fire and does not change while the weapon is firing. It can, however, be modified based on the ship's motion while not firing. The arc will rotate slowly to face the direction opposite the ship's motion. Also, the arc will widen as the player moves toward the enemy and vice versa.

(thanks wiki again)

Yet again a free game you can find all over the place! this is a great game while waiting for things to download or some time to kill.

I found an awesome game at work the other day 'machinarium' its a point and click adventure game llike the old sam and max ones, except its got robots and a very dark steampunky/fuseli/romantic style. kind of like that new tim burton animation. really awesome soundtrack and it won a bunch of visual art in gaming awards. made by a Czech company - this is the type of game i would love to maek/be a part of one day. really awesome. and it just uses flash i think.

[Link to machinarium.net]

you can download it from steam for $20 euro, but me and leigh got the collectors with concept art and soundtrack for $50au.

It needs to be said, regardless of its clicheness:

World of Warcraft

Well, pretty much all of the Warcraft games, especially Warcraft 3: Frozen Throne. The art direction philosophy is so vastly different from anything else on the market.

Everything is VERY lo-fi, and it really adds to the appeal. Its like Bethesda is aiming for the far side of the uncanny valley and only just missing it, but Blizzard stay well on the toon side and it actually makes it MORE immersive.

liberal use of overlay shaders, proper use of distance fogging and other pretties make it jaw droppingly pretty, although the graphics engine would probably run on my old nokia at full speed.

No, no it didn't need to be said LOL
I have to say warcraft 1 I missed for some reason.
I did play warcraft 2 a-lot as it was one of the few games I could play against my older brother (as he was a mac user), it wasnt the best but was good for some fun smile.gif and warcraft 3 was one of the worst strat games I have ever played stare.gif mind you DoTA did come out of it so it isn't all bad.
Have to say WoW, not a fan, tried it, got that shirt, didn't fit lol.

Your right about the toony thing though, it is because when we look at something trying to be real you can easily see it isn't and the immersion is broken. But if it is being toony then you accept that, and it is easier to accept it for what it is.

It is ok, I wouldn't talk to me either...
