I borrowed Dark Messiah of Might and Magic from a friend, but have yet to play it. My brother says it is good but a little short. Doesn't have the freedom of Oblivion though..

I've started playing old Lucasarts adventure games. The'yre really good because you can play them while you're rendering something. Currently I'm playing Monkey Island II. Also a bit of Richard Burns Rally, Flatout 2 and Oblivion when I can get the time.

Oh man I am a lucasarts addict. I have Monkey I, Monkey II, DOTT, Sam n Max (that might not actually be a LA, but still freaking sweet!) and I used to have LOOM but I lost it before I could play it.

Where abouts are you upto in MI2?

You want to get a copy of Full Throttle, the best lucas arts adventure game ever.

and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

Your a biker in a gang called the polecats. You meet the maker of the number one bike manufacturer in the country and then you and your gang get framed for his murder. basically you have to clear you name and bring the real killer to justice. along the way you meet other gangs, fight them while on your bikes using among other things, planks of wood and chainsaws. You also get to perform a kickass evil knievel style stunt across a chasm and take part in a destruction derby. if you can track down a copy you'll need this to run it. [Link to www.scummvm.org]

DoTT is the ultimate... I don't think adventure games got any sweeter than that. If you use the (latest) SCUMM engine to run it you can access the original Maniac Mansion directly (it was a made minigame within DoTT).

Full throttle is right up there; one of my faves. Very fond memories... *wipes tears from eyes*

Go and get `Beneath a Steel Sky'. It's been ported to the SCUMM engine, I think, and you can download it for free (it's old, so they lifted the copyright). Not LA, but it's an essential classic for any die hard gamers collection.

On the theme of adventure games, I'm playing `Broken Sword: The Sleeping Dragon'. The graphics are a little dated, so the whole `3D adventure games are the way of the future' thing looks a little forced. Can't wait to play the latest `Broken Sword: The Angel of Death'.

Actually, I'm in the process of making my own adventure game... Would anyone be interested in the progress? e.g. posts of WIPs etc. Sure, it's not 3D (probably pixelated sprites) but it's something that's obviously still interesting to some of those on the forum.
... or did you think I was too stupid to know what a yoogoogoly was?

I have the games in their original form, no need for ScummVM and it did have the original MM as a minigame. But yes, DoTT is the freaking tops.

that would be sweet! what are you writing it in? C++ or Visual Basic? Maybe some of the people here could do the models for you?

Moses: The ORIGINALS! That's so awesome smile.gif. Did you get them in their heyday or later at some kind of crazy game collectors store. Mucho cudos to you...

The editor I'm using is a third party freeware package called Adventure Game Studio (AGS). Definitely won't have the control over the code as much as I could using C++ or VB but it'll save me a lot of time programming (which is something I don't have a lot of these days). The end product will be a Sierra/LucasArts style point-and-click jobby. I'd love to get a full voice-over track on it and I'll be composing all the theme/background music on my computer using Reason etc. Any help with voices would be awesome; I can only twist my vocal cords so many ways...

One thing I definitely would like to try is some of you guys doing the models (and backgrounds!). I'll probably do a bit/lot of post-processing to get a certain feel in the end, but the bulk of the art would be greatly helped with a bit of 3D; that way it'll even help contribute to this forum smile.gif. I'd like to get the semi-cartoon feel of games like Beneath a Steel Sky since it gives me a nice fuzzy feeling (and is easier to pull off!). A really good 3D rendered 2D adventure game was BladeRunner. I loved that game... But something like that'd be too hard to do well.

I'm working on the story... I'm going for a sci-fi (with more on the `sci') story. I'm gonna try to update my bLog with the progress (I'm not giving out the address yet as it's still a mess frown.gif ).

If anyone's interested in any modelling, I guess this could become a kind of `challenge/WIP'. Maybe wait until I have the details sorted, then things will make more sense... Stay posted.

All this old school adventure game talk has reminded me of one of the funniest point and click games ever. Lesuire Suit Larry. A much more adult game than the lucas arts adventures. you play larry a loser in a lesuire suit and your aim is to get laid. A quality and very dirty game where every wrong move leads to you dieing. track it down, its probably easily available but i'm not sure if it'll run in windows.
and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

OMG, I think LL1 was the first adventure game I ever played! It was on a really really old PC in MONOCHROME! The hard part was getting past the adult quiz at the beginning to verify your age... Steve Martin has a copy of LL6. I think that was one of the last descent Leisuresuit Larry games before they went all commercial and trying to keep up with the mainstream.

Oh yeah, in response to Jamie's original question (what are the games everyone is playing), I've gotten into an MMORPG called Guild Wars: Nightfall. It's a little like World of Warcraft (in the MMORPG sense) but it plays more like Dungeon Seige II. And the best part is: there's no subscription fee! I'm really hanging out for other people to play online with (to create guilds, teamplay, etc.) so if anyone's interested, I rate it pretty highly.

Two friends of mine played Guild Wars (albeit rather sporadically). Do you want me to harass them for their character names??

Ive seen the game and the design of it. Sexy Mama!!

More old school point and click goodness. Discworld. I just downloaded it and in answer to jamies original question this is the game i will be be playing and playing it for quite a while. If i remember right the puzzles are fiendishly difficult. For those who don't know its based on the discworld books by terry pratchet and the main character is voiced by monty pythons eric idle. how can you go wrong?
and it's a story that might bore you, but you don't have to listen, because I always knew it was going to be like that.

I just bought a SNES. I got Link to the Past and Darius Twin for it. I'm a bit bummed though, because most of the games I was hoping to get are JP versions, like all the square games (chrono trigger being my fav) and they dont run on the AU machine.

If anyone knows where to get good RPGs for SNES let me know.

Also scored some games for my Master System.

Depends. Are we talking 2D Mario games, later 3D Mario games or Mario RPG?

To Jamie or Matt - A game dedicated forum might be a wise investment.
