We're in an exciting time where multithreading is the new frontier in computing evolution. GPU processing seems to be the answer to a specific group of problems in processing float point data in a program.
I have a 8800GTS (you can get these cheap now) that uses a pluggin called CUDA that enables my video card to process data on the GPU other than real time shading and geometry.
So far the things i've found interesting are the real time physics found in the free video game "Warmonger." The pluggin PhysX allows almost every object in level to be destructible or malleable. For example i was attempting to be a "camping fag" while sniping out a window. The other team caught on to me after and started shooting back. At first i felt safe because i was on the third floor of a building. The entire wall was chopped to pieces by their fire and the floor below me fell in as a missle struck from beneath. That's when i realized the entire building (except for some ibeam supports) was destructible. And it looked great because of the realtime physics acceleration.
What are your experiences with GPU acceleration? Do you use folding@home (cure cancer with your video card!)? Are you a math wiz and use your gpu for extreme calculations?
Currently excel dosn't use the GPU, but i hope it will someday...
I built my new system a few months ago and are running (2) ATI HD 4800's CrossFire. Make an extreme difference for rendering 3DS Max. Haven't had much time for gaming these days since COD4 was released.

ATI video cards have a special GPU video converter that allows long movies to convert in minutes. You should try it! Like if you want to go from DVD to ipod, for example.
I'm looking to upgrade my graphics card (as I mentioned in another thread) I have a quaddro FX 3000 at the moment but it doesnt support shader model 3 and above so games and more importantly unreal ed doesnt run on my desktop. unfortunaley the port in my machine is AGP so I can't get a pci express card like the 9600 GT as suggested in the other thread. any one know of a good budget agp card?
Great article about accelerating adobe products with your video card's GPU.
Note that you CAN HACK your Nvidia 8000 and 9000 cards to run like a quadro 4. [Link to www.fudzilla.com]
There will be if not already.
ATI Stream is like Nvidia CUDA

I looked around and couldn't find any specific program that allowed you take advantage of your ATI GPU for video editing but i'm sure it's just a matter of time. You might want to look around, as well.
ATI Avivo™ Video Converter uses your gpu for rendering.
Good news.
"RTSquare is a 3D rendering software designed with a new architecture to accelerate rendering. This revolutionnary technolgy takes advantage of the programmability and the power of your graphic card (GPU) to render imagery of uncompromising quality at unheard of speeds.
RTSquare is the first entirely GPU-based renderer plug-in for 3DS Max and VIZ which uses a new technology to render great images at high speeds.
RTSquare is compatible with Autodesk 3DS Max 6, 7 and 8 and with VIZ 2005 or newer."
