Anyone, know what hardware has the most influence on rendering times? It's getting towards upgrade time (I hope) and I want to know what areas to spend the most on. I've heard that the graphics card helps viewport speeds but doesn't have any effect on rendering speeds. Is this true?

I'm fairly sure RAM will be your best best for rendering.

some people are using server boards ...twin quad xeon mb with lots of ram for max

also 3ds max was designed with intel quad core cpus in mind. not all programs utilise all the cores ..but max does. the q6600 is very cheap at present and you can over clock it from 2.4ghz x4 up to around 3.4ghz x4 on air cooling and 4ghz'+' x4 on water cooled systems. ( just gotta keep the temps down basically)

some very fast ddr3 memory out there. very expensive tho and the latencies are higher than ddr2.(this might effect audio work more than video.)
