Hi,
I'm just starting a new university project and I've come a bit stuck. I'm experiencing some odd "glitches" on my material, even though the bitmap template (which is the diffuse colour on my material assigned to the mesh) hasnt changed at all. See the image below for the problem.

I think it may be my uvw mapping, I'm not that great at it. I saw the tutorial on this website but it isnt wordy enough and I dont quite understand whats going on in it! Its where you have to start editing and choosing planar/cylindrical/pelt etc that I get confused at - I cant get a good template drawn up. Mine is VERY sloppy so I think it'll be that. Will have to give it another go some time I think.

Any other suggestions would be great, I've allready re-mapped it twice but would rather not do it again if possible. Think that might be the only way though..

Thanks

could you post an image of your uv layout from the uv editor window.

Here it is, quite embarrasing as its pretty bad (and I dont 100% understand it)! I'm sure it could be a lot simpler as its not meant to be a very complex model, just different colours and maybe a bit of "grain" for a bit of texture so its not completely smooth. I just want the t-shirt to be red with black shoulders, jeans to be blue with a belt around the waist, pink skin (arms and head) and plain black shoes.

well the uvs look pretty good. you have a few overlaps here and there which might be causing the errors. when you go to: tools> render uvw template
set the fill mode to solid and hit render UV template that will show you all the overlaps in red, then just move the points around to get rid of any overlapping faces. or you might consider simply applying different materials directly to mesh selections. and maybe only paint a texture for the face.

Just realised thats the old uv template, heres the newest one. If its worse please tell me and I'll just keep using the old one!

I was thinking it might be easier just to do multi/sub-object materials, but that doesnt seem to be as flexible/cant add as good detail as I may be able to with a uvw/photoshopped image. Plus I think it'll get me less marks as its easier/not as complex.

yeah I guess attempting to unwrap it is good for the learning experience. the texture layout seems fine but you need to track down whats causing those glitches. try picking the points with problems in the viewport and see which verts they are in your uv edit window. then if its in an area with overlaps correct it and see if the glitch is gone.

Alright well I just did the thing you said about showing overlaps in red by shading the solids. Some of the glitches are in places of overlap, but some arent. For instance the face in the template has no red marks.

I'll try to follow the tutorial on this site and make a simplified map. Will post back my results. If nothing else it'll get me more comfortable with the layout, hopefully!

edit - followed the tutorial and its just not working for some reason. So at the minute I'm just leaving it as a multi/sub-object material and waiting to see what my tutor says. Hopefully I can get away without the uvw texturing, as the main point of the project isnt about materials/textures of my character!
